Passenger window mechanism failure
 

Hello: Lowered the passenger window (electric) on my 81 sc today, and there it stayed. Removed the door card, etc., and can see that there is a piece in the door (B) that is actually obstructing the mechanism. The channel that the glass rests in and the scissoring mechanism that the channel rides on (A) are hitting this piece as the window attempts to rise.
The photo is with the camera in the small front opening of the door by the hinge, looking back toward the end of the door that has the handle on it.

That's the bracket for the window channel,try loosening it a bit and reposition. There's an Allen screw attaching it to door under door card.

The part marked B is actually connected to the vent window. The vent window goes down inside the door in the form of a front window channel.

I loosened it slightly, but it is blocking the last inch or so of the channel holding the glass. Where is B supposeed to be positioned when the glass is all the way down? The mechanism cannot get up past it - is A supposed to rest on top of B?

With the glass detached that rail (A) can slide from side to side on the rollers. Slide it backwards until it clears the bracket. There's a spec for how far beyond the forward edge of the rail the forward edge of glass should sit - I don't have it handy but you can probably eyeball it well enough.

There should be a rubber U-shaped lining inside the rail which sandwiches the glass - I don't see it in your pic. It's necessary. Check to see if the rail is rusted through especially on the bottom - if it is the glass will slip out again. With a solid rail and good clean rubber you shouldn't need glue to keep the window in rail. Take this opportunity to grease the rollers and the rest of the window mechanism. Search and you'll find good info.

Note: this is based on my coupe - targas and cabs may be different.

EDIT: It should require some force to get the window seated in the rail. (Not enough to shatter your window hopefully!) To spare the mechanism, stick something in your door for support (2x4, etc.) and lower the mechanism gently onto it. Then from above with the window sufficiently open press evenly down on the glass until it seats - other posts describe this better.

If you can wait till morning I have a door out in my shop let me examine it and get back to you tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully by then a few others will chime in. It's hard for me to explain without looking at one. Also search the threads there's a few on this topic don't be afraid the window mechanisms are really not that complicated.

Start by checking the bottom of your door are there any small parts floating around in there?
