New to Porsche 911/Engines, need response for course please!
 

Hey everyone,

I'm new to cars and engines and am taking an internal combustion engine course this semester. I really enjoy the Porsche 911 and was wondering if I can get some information on where to start in regards to learning about the 911. This is part of a homework assignment where I am to join a new forum, start a post, and receive a response.

Technically you are making a post and starting a thread.

I think we all agree you picked a great engine . The engine however has evolved greatly over the years, in fuel management , size, and overall technology. Perhaps it would be good to state the years of which greatly interest you ?

there were the carb years,
The mechanical fuel injection years
There were the CIS years ( My personal favorite )
Then there was the motronic years ( electronic fuel injection ) , and that was just the fuel systems.

After that things went into dual plugs , dual cams , water cooling and all kinds of goodies ..

When I was 9, my grandparents bought me a Revell 1/3 scale 2.3L Ford Turbo model kit for Christmas. It has a clear block and heads, with all the internals in solid colors and little red lights for spark plugs. The starter motor was battery powered and would crank over the engine. The lighted spark plugs would even fire in the correct sequence.

Assembling and running this engine taught me, at the age of 9, how 4 stroke internal combustion engines work. In fact, it became the center of my 4th grade science fair project that I won 1st in class and grand prize overall. The judges were pretty impressed with my knowledge of the subject.

I came back in the 5th grade with a working scale model of a Mazda Wankel rotary engine and won again!

Here's a link to what I'm talking about. I know they still sale the V8 visible model kits. This gives a great 3 dimensional visual of what's going on inside and how the various components work together. I know it's not exactly an air cooled flat six, but it represents a majority of the engine types out there.

But, to be more authentic, post a REAL problem you are trying to solve, in the correct forum.

Angela, I'm located in Sacramento and attend CSUS.

I am not entirely sure where to start in terms of which specific year engine but I will definitely check out the different types of engines and how they have progressed the further I get into this semester. Also, thanks Josh D and trackrash for the suggestions and picture.

You can buy Wayne Dempsey's "How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines". There is also the "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" by Bruce Anderson. "Porsche 911 Story" by Paul Frere is also useful.

Other than that, just search the engine rebuild forum here for lots of gorgeous pictures.

What kind of information do you need? I used 911 dimensions and specific output for a homework assignment in an engine course I took.
