Fuel pump
Hey guys
So I bought a battery tonight to start running a few electrical tests and started off testing the fuel pump.. After reading a lot of your threads I did the FP test and shorted the FP relay socket between 30 and 87a with the ignition in the on position Before this I switched ignition to on but not run with the relay in and could hear it energizing but with the relay out and shorted it sounded almost as though it was thudding which immediatley made me think it was seized. I got underneath and wasn't really getting any voltage reading which was strange not sure if my voltage meter was not working so stuff it I began to take it out. Getting it out was no problem but I immediately felt that it was quite warm ...and still full of 15 year old leaded fuel.... I tested the contacts again on the fuel pump cable and yep getting 12v there now..which I wasn't before with it connected dunno why... But I've come to the conclusion that the pump is gone....can they seize or not work from sitting around?? Wondering why it would now be no good. ![]() |

After sitting for many years fuel pumps have a tendency to fail.

probably because you were measuring across the 2 terminals of the FP. you were reading the voltage drop across the FP. ALWAYS measure to ground as a default. another reason to use a test light.
just because you read 12v at the FP does not mean the connection is good enough to provide the current to run the pump. use a test light. connect it to the body and check for power then connect it to the return or ground wire and check for power.
