Wow! My girlfriend surprised me with a new 3 tier tool box last night. Her reason... just because! it's not Snap-on quality (Harbor Freight) but much better than where my tools are kept now. On the floor, on the table saw, floor of truck, floor of jeep, scattered here and there. Since I work in so many different places, I just throw what I might need in a canvas bag to bring with me. It takes me an hour to round up enough tools to do a 15 minute job. now I can keep them all in one place. at least for a while before they get scattered again. And she has no problem getting down and dirty helping me work on things. I think I've got a good one now (girlfriend that is)

John.. Harbor Freight is OK.. some tools may have to adjusted to better quality.. get the itty bitty flex head ratchet set. all 3 are about $12.. I keep a HF 1/2 tourqe wrench permanently onboard for lug nuts.. costs about $15.. as a matter of fact, I keep a full set of everything in smugglers box, costs $150.. keeps me relaxed..........Ron

I have allways had a large tool box of some sort, And allways had a problem getting the tools Back in them, Having them on the bench the floor the canvis bag 5 gallon bucket So on and so forth It is a hard habit to brake I now have a 6' tall snap on box full of snapon tools that I bought from a money straped friend, They are way to much $$$$$$ to leave laying all over the floor I'm doing much better at putting them away, I still have some relapses, I think I need a Shrink (But my old tools are still all over the floor in the other garage) :D

I've got plenty of Harbor Freight tools. they will get the job done in a pinch. not great quality, but good enough when there's nothing better around. I've lost or broken more tools than most people have owned. I've got everything I need for carpentry, pools, mechanic work, etc. now I finally have a box to put all the hand tools in one place. What I need is a job testing tools. I'm very rough with them and if a tool makes it 3 months in my hands without breaking, then it's a good tool. If I can make it that long without losing it by then or run over it with heavy equipment. I think nothing of using my old Skil cordless drills 4 ft underwater. Hmmm, maybe that's why I have about 10 drills that don't work anymore. hehe btw, the girlfriend used to race Mini's in England, was once Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber's personal chef and managed his wine collection. Now she's a wine distributor. I've finally got it good

that's no joke.. great for a quick hole in a bulkhead that trapped water in another compartment.. usually a quick rinse with clean water and a blow dry gets thru the boating season.........Ron

Anybody know where you can find used toolboxes? (The rolling type) My neigbhor gave me his old one, I re-painted it, works and looks fine. Now I have an idea on making a movable work bench/station.

Does anybody have a tool(s) that they can't live without when working on their 911? This may be covered elsewhere, but I am curious what you all can't live without.

There are so many but, I really like having my impact wrench. Quickly loosens stubborn bolts, lug nuts and things that would other wise need leverage ( ex: steering wheel nut ). Also nuts that are torqued tightly like the rear axle nut. (saves a trip to the local wrench to loosen the nut, and also a questionable ride home).

Used tool boxes?

Pawn shop.

One of the past practices of our local Snap-on dealers was to offer tool boxes at discount prices. The idea was that you would buy snap-on tools to fill them.

Many times I asked the Snap-on or Mac guys that I know if the have a used box that they would like to sell. Every one of them has one any time I have asked.

I got mine by holding it for a cash strapped friend.

BTW, I have two sets of HF car dollies. The P-Car now can go anywhere in the garage. Good things to have.

For the first 19 years of my carreer I made my money with tools in hy hands. I've used just about all the brands, and for the life of me can't understand why everyone is so high on snap-on. I'm just not that impressed with them to justify the added cost. They look cool, maybe that's it.

My first preference is proto but Harbor Freight does have many good tools. The allen wrenches (hex keys) are very good, so are the black-handled Pittsburgh screwdrivers they sell. I really like their chrome combination wrenches, but some might find they are a little too short. They are about 1" shorter than the proto's.

Some of the stuff is junk but if you know what to look for you can't go wrong.
I do suggest staying away from anything they sell that is designed for cutting i.e. drill bits, saw blades, etc unless they are brand names. My general rule of thumb: if a cutting tool is made in China, run away.

Used tools...I've never looked, but often in the classifieds of The Portland Yellow pages (aka THE OREGONIAN) under the tools category you see ads that begin with "mechanic retiring, snap-on rollaway filled with Craftsman/snap-on/Mac.."...These are usually with an asking price beyond my budget, like $2,000 and up...But I've often wondered if in the long run, responding to ads like these might be a better buy than just adding things a set or a tool at a time, like I've done. Buying all of Evren's road trip tools in a few trips to Sears and other places (we bought more yesterday..a few fill in's) can add up into real $ fast! Made me realize how much I've spent over the years, and I really don't have that many tools...

Kinda on the same topic: Home Depot had a pretty slick workbench on display the other day. I will probably get one this weekend. It's "toolbox red" with a couple of drawers and an overshelf with fluorescent light, and a utility outlet strip. Under $200 I think. Better looking than my homegrown bench. I've always been a sucker for benches with built-in lights.

I have purchased 'craftsman' boxes & tools from the snap-on delivery trucks. They take them in on trade, and off them pretty inexpensively.

Got my "Griot's Garage" catalog last week. They've got a nice Facom toolbox, a steal at $3500.
