1984 Euro 911 3.2 in Nashville Tennessee?
I am considering buying a 1984 Euro-spec Carrera from a gentleman in NC. I live in Nashville TN and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Euro-Spec cars in Nashville and getting them to pass emissions? This car has an excellent service history and it has no trouble passing inspection in NC but I would just hate to get it here and not have it pass. I guess I could always put "antique" tags on it? Your thoughts, opinions and overall impressions of Euro-spec 911's are welcomed and most appreciated as well. Thanks!

Really depends on your state. Here in PA a car that old has to pass visual and gas cap emissions, which probably wouldn't be an issue for an '84 Euro.

My '85 Euro didn't cooperate at all when I needed to go through the emissions test. (I finally found "The Guy"who passed the car for me) I think it may all depend on how the federalization process was done on your car. On mine, a Cat was added with an O2 bung, the wire was then routed to a little box under the Passenger seat. The wires from the box were then routed into the main wires harness where they were spiced into the system. I imagine that little box will make it or break it with regard to emissions. Luckily, in GA, I became exempt once the car turned 25 years old. I then got rid of all that stuff and returned the car back to how it was meant to be in Germany. The car really came alive once that was done.

You'll love the xtra HP the Euro has....I've a euro in Az but since I carry 'collector car' insurance have no smog check to deal with.
Check all of your local laws there may be a few avenues for you.

I didn't realize tennessee does emissions testing. Is that annual or do you just have to do it once when you purchase the car?

I don't have any input with regards to emission testing but I do like my 85 Euro. More power than the domestic version, transmission cooler, and some nice cosmetic differences. Because of the increased compression ratio I do run the highest octane fuel I can find, around here it's Chevron 94. Every now and then my car seems to require a Techron additive and a good old fashioned "Italian tune up", because it seems to prefer hard use that I can't always provide. Cheers

John, Call Wickie @ Renntag Motorwerks((615) 226-4928). I would have to think he could make some adjustments if required to make it pass emissions. If you buy it, you will want his number either way.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The guy ended up not wanting to sell the car after all... Bummer.
Pstallo, to answer your question, I can't speak to the rest of TN but in Nashville, the car must pass a smog test to get registered and tagged, you then have to do this once a year for renewal. 25 year old cars can be exempt as Antiques but you're only supposed to drive to events and shows etc. Somebody told me they don't enforce it strictly here though. |
