Please explain correct glove box lite 3 way switch

Does the glove light behave like the cabin lites. Forward = always on. Center = on w door open. Back = never on?

I cant get mine on w door. The doow switch seems to be a simple ground body switch, i cleaned it up but no dice. Missing something here?

Glove light:

Towards you ON
Center Off
Back on only when glove door is open via switch to the right of the box.

Thanks. I'm guessing there's a problem with the contact on the door switched position since the door switch is dead simple (and I contact-cleaned it a bunch just to be sure).

I'll pull the multi meter out as well.

Just put a jumper alligator clip wire on and take it to ground on the upstream feed to the switch. Continuity MM test works too.

Assuming you have a place to latch onto, though.

Okay I did not expect this but there is not continuity between the "door" setting contact and the body aka ground. The switch is not the problem. In other words, the problem seems to be "in the wiring" which is almost never the case.... odd.

Just to be clear, are you saying that the wire from the button in the glove box opening is not grounded when the door is open?

Nope I'm saying that the brown and white striped wire that goes to the "door" position on the glove light itself (left) does not have continuity with any ground point on the car.

I couldn't find a detailed schematic in Bentley of this system. Does anyone know where that wire goes?

Okay, gotcha.

That brown/white wire goes to the door button. If it has no ground continuity, then it is either disconnected from the button or the button switch is faulty.

Most def no continuity from the brown/white on the light and the brown/white on the door. Does the wire make any intermediate stops between the two? I may be crazy but the wire to the light looks ever so slightly thicker gauge than the one to the switch....

Also if it runs direct, and I can see the terminations on both elements than that means it was cut somewhere!?

According to the wiring diagram for a 79-83 (not your year), there is a wire connector under the dash to which the wire from the button is connected. It is identified as a 6 wire connector. This type of wiring is usually not changed so you may want to trace the wire from the button back to the connector and see if all is secure.

Great thank you I'll get down there and see what there is to see.
