some tips.....engine removal
I just pulled the tranny on my daughter's f250 and I was really not looking forward to all the time under the truck. I always start out trying to be organized and clean but it does not not always happen. So I came up with a use for an old creeper. One tray for my tools and one for bolts. This worked REALLY great. I could move my tools around and keep them close or move them out of the way. It also kept them off the ground and kept them cleaner.
I also use a cart for my tools when working on top. I can pull it around and keep it close. The second pic. It never fails. You can't ever get it clean. This small pool works great for when the c at is in the garage. One other thing. Pull the fuel pump relay when you take the engine out. I did some electrical work after pulling the CIS off. Needless to I put a gallon or so on the floor. ![]() ![]()

BRILLIANT!!!
Inevitably... Always... Every freakin' time... I get some tool, or nut, or bolt, underneath me and lose track of it. It ALWAYS gets caught under the castor wheel of my dolly , which jams the dolly wheel, and then I cannot roll in the right direction to retrieve it. As an aside- I remember this happened to my dad once, who dropped a hot soldering iron beneath him and then proceeded to put his hand on the hot tip trying to find it. It burnt a huge chunk out of the palm of his hand. Wow- this makes me dread my next project down under a little less. Thanks! Ron Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 08-30-2015 at 04:56 PM.. |

I've re-purposed an old creeper too. Great idea. The baby pool is brilliant.

That creeper on the left sucks. The side pockets are nice but it does not roll very good and it is not comfortable. Also hard for this old fay guy to get of.

Ok. Finally got to the one I have really been wanting to post. A great way to pull an engine by myself.
So I have pulled many engines from VW to 914 and 914-6 and 911 and I have always done them by myself. This was my first 930 and as a complete motor it is LOT more tricky due to the turbo and other parts that make it harder to balance. In fact when I pulled this engine I removed the turbo and exhaust. The hard part about pulling an engine has always been balancing it on a jack. So I wanted to find a way to bolt it to the jack. So the first thing is I am using a transmission jack. Unfortunately it is a very large jack. The meat of it. I got lucky. I did both brackets based on one side. If the engine had been sitting crooked on the jack then the length of the brackets would have been wrong. I figured a 4 bolt bracket was better. With 2 or 3 if the motor started to tilt the CV joints could just rotate. I also wanted the bracket to be as vertical as possible. That way the force on them was up or down. The last minute thing that worked out really well and made the engine more stable was the block of wood I cut to fit the very back of the block. It has a cutout for the last case bolt. To the drawback. This tranny jack is so big I have never gotten anything out from under a car with it on the jack, except for this motor. I usually have to set whatever I have pulled on jack stands the procariously lower it down to a dolly.

the other good thing about the tranny jack is it tilts front to back and left to right to match the angle of the car.
the other great thing is you can push the engine sideways or rotate it under the car because all 4 wheels swivel. with a floor jack you have to pull the engine out turn it then push it back in, and with a fully built engine there may not be much room to move it.
