Simple Brake Pad Replacement Question

I am planning on replacing rear brake pads on my 88 Carrera tomorrow morning. I've read Wayne's instructions and one comment has me curious. He states to make sure the parking brake is off. My understanding is that the parking brake is cable controlled and works with two drum style pads inside each rotor, and is completely independent of the hydraulic disc brake system. So I'm wondering why it matters if parking brake is on or off. There is probably an obvious answer that I'm just not snapping to, and if so feel free to figuratively thump me on the head, but I was just curious. Thanks.

Oops. Read that wrong.

You are correct that having it applied or not will not make a difference when replacing the rear pads.

Thank you for the clarification.

In case you're a n00b like me, here is the caliper removal step I was briefly stuck on (first 2 pics)

Thank you. I'll definitely study that.

P brake off is for removing the rear rotors. Pads not affected.
