speedometer not working

The speedometer was taken out tested and does work on the bench but no longer on the car. The engine had been out awhile for rebuild. Once all tested and installed including testing the speed o cable. The Gauge will not work?
I am guessing the cable is slightly falling back toward the engine and then is too short to turn the speedo but the question is why and how do I repair.
Note nothing had changed cable was fine and was never removed so why would it move now and what suggestions do you guys suggest.?
I made sure the cable was in its place in the dash before I locked the cable into the Gauge too.

Speedo is controlled by the cable which goes into the Transmission. Was this taken out and touched as well? Is it a 901 or a 915? Make sure the cable is installed on the trans correctly and pending on what they did while the motor was out, something may have changed...

The cable was not out just disconnected at the engine. Speedo gear was never out everything is the same. It seems like the interior cable is now shorter which makes no sense. Any ideas on solutions?
915 gearbox.

Now if you did the work and nothing changed, then there is something else going on. Routing of the cable isn't correct like before - check placement and see where its being held up at. Sounds like its held up somewhere in the system (maybe in the tunnel?) Perhaps up by the speedo in the front trunk? I think there is only a few options as the system is very simple: gauge, cable, trans.

Hope this helps.

I would check the connections by the shift-coupler.

I have checked all of the above and from what I can tell for some strange reason it is now approx. 1/8" to 1/4" shorter. It does rotate as I held the inner cable in my hand while I drove around the lot and nothing is holding it from turning. The gauge came back today and it is fine so I will try once more to see if I can pull the inner cable again and see if that works.
A good source told me the newer cables are a bit longer so I ordered a new inner hoping it will solve the shortness problem.
I know there is nothing too this and we only disconnected at the gear box and reinstalled but something is definitely different. Thanks

Rufcar,

Could you post some pictures? I re-read your posts several times and having a problem interpreting it. Thanks.

Tony just now saw you post. I reinstalled everything this afternoon but with the heavy rains I did not take the car out to test but I believe it still will not work. Id have to disassemble to take pics.
I am sorry I thought I was clear I guess I was not. To make this simple the speedo works on the bench, the cable turns in the housing but put together the speedo does not work. It is all connected correctly at the gearbox otherwise the shaft would not turn. I held the shaft in my hand and drove the car with the speedo out and you cant stop the cable from turning so I know it is not a connection problem or a broken cable. I can only guess the cable reseeds down in the shaft once connected to the speedo and is then too short to turn the speedo. I do not know what else to think.

Sunday a.m. All re assembled and even though I bet it would not work it now does work! The speedo shop did little but check and test I made sure the shaft was again in and now it works? Well don't know what happened or why but now all is well. Maybe something internal was frozen after a yr sitting and the shop taking it apart to check cleared away what ever was causing the problem! who knows! Tkx to all for the friendly advice! Jim f
