Decipher these numbers, please
 

I took a race (straight road) a while ago with a 911 S Targa 2.7 -77 and what I noticed I could accelerate almost as fast as he did. And my car is supposed to be a 2.4T -71

So I was wondering if my car had been fitted with "steeper" cams by PO. My car currently has webers and I think it had originally FI.

Here are the numbers:

Alternator shroud: 901 106 101 5R
Engine: 6520398

Car chassis: 9112510215

What can you tell me of these?

That engine number is consistent with a 1972 Type 911/57 engine, which was the European carbureted version of the 2.4 911T engine, the 'TV' version. A '77 2.7 has at least three factors against it on the road against your car:

1. A weight penalty of around 150-200 lbs.

2. A restrictive, untuned exhaust system that cost at least 10 hp over the 1974 version of the 2.7 CIS engine;

3. The 8:31 ring and pinion in the later 915 cost acceleration in the lower gears due to the 'taller' nature of the gearing.

The net result was that '75 thru '77 2.7 911S cars were limited to a top speed of around 125-129 mph, and 0-60 mph times of around 8.5 - 9.0 seconds, no better than your car under the best of circumstances!
