Update on "I am in head stud hell.." - it's out, and I'm a happy guy!
The stud is out! THANKS for the advice (heat, Snapon extractor, and tap with hammer as you're turning) - it worked great. Time for a beer.

There wasn't a lot meat left on that one, Colin. Good job! When I bought my set of Snap-on extractors (to replace a set of Chinese "Snap-off" extractors), I almost had a heart attack at the price tag. But they have never let me down. Good tools *pay*, they don't cost.

what's the part number on the set of snap on extractors? can't seem to find them.

The set I've got is called "REX10A" 10 Piece Screw Extractor Set. By Snap On. It cost me less than $30, about five years ago. Hope they're not too spendy now. They are certainly worth it, even if the price has tripled. Comes in a nice case.
Congratulations. Even with the right tool, this is an easy job to screw up, so to speak. Jolly good show.
