How much to tighten oil line

I replaced a leaky hard oil line from the thermostat to the engine.

Upon testing, it leaked at the thermostat. I took it down and tightened again and it is still leaking. Everytime I do this I have to drop the oil lines with the thermostat attached and all the way to the front cooler because my car has the vent and wooden slats in the rear flare, right at the location of the thermostat. Needless to say I dont want to have to drop it but one more time.

Does this require a super tight connection, cheater bar etc? People usually have problems taking them off but I dremeled the nut.

Usually a clean male and female union has a tight seal unless one or both has a booger somewhere on the mating surfaces. Take it apart, clean with brake cleaner and inspect the surfaces.

Dr. J,

To get a good seal for the auxiliary thermostats, you need to make sure that all four (4) compression fittings have good and clean mating surfaces. Second, they should line up straight and square. As you tigthen the nuts, inspect the alignment of the oil tubes with respect with the thermostat and gradually tighten. If the tubes are free to move, it would self align and seal, but the common problem is that they are some what restricted to align because of the bracket or angle of the oil tube with respect to the thermostat. I usually guide and adjust the alignment as you tigthen the big nut.

Tony
