Front seat and shifter issue

Hey guys I haven't investigated much into why the non-powered seats are doing this but my drivers side handle is stuck solid and both seats are just sliding freely front and back wondering if anyone has any initial thoughts of attack for me..

Also I've had the shifter removed and have re-installed it but the actually shifter turns on the spot like it's not knocked down all the way..does this need to be set in something like some sort of glue ?

Seats

Most likely the plastic holding clips under the seat have either dislodged or broken, it is connected to the 3-4 toothed lever that sits in the rails to lock the seats in place. An inexpensive part but a PITA to work under such small space. If you can, removing the seats will give you a better orientation of how the system works.

Did you replace the crush sleeve, if not those are not re-usable, again an inexpensive part. You will still get some spinning but it will have to be intentional with some heavy twisting but for normal use the shift knob will stay in place. I do not recommend glue, it will destroy the knob in the future removal.

Cheers,

Jim

Yes I dare say I will have to remove the seats...in regards to the shifter it's not the knob that's an issue its the rod itself that is spinning and being difficult when shifting into gears

Is your coupler clamp tight? I have lots of shifter parts and a couple spare couplers, let me know if you need anything. Might want to replace the two plastic bushings on the shift rod, cheap and easy to install.

I recently had my seats out to lube up my sliders and install a fire extinguisher mount. I did not see any plastic parts in the slider mechanism.

if the shifter rod is rotating, the bonding between the upper rod and the lower may have failed.

I had to weld mine in place and I learned that the factory bonds the upper and lower rod together rather than welding.......at least on my 1973

What year is your 911?

I see two teeth on my 81. All looks metal to me but that is what I see. Never took it apart.

I am guessing the lifting arm shaft has corroded in the "hinge" right next to the part on the arm that engages with the seat runner teeth.

Pull the seat. Look for the obvious broken or seized part.. It is a very simple mechanism.

Try penetrating fluid for a few days to free up the shaft if that's what it looks like.

I guess I misunderstood "handle is stuck solid" if it is rotating when you pull it.
