Paint chip on the roof

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm very inexperienced. What do you make of this paint chip, could there be some rust underneath? How serious of an issue does it look like? The car is 4 hrs away so I'd rather have an idea before I make the trip...

Hard to tell from the picture about the possibility of rust underneath, but that is not a typical spot for it. Given the thickness of the paint there, it is possible that is an area that was repaired (maybe a dent from something that fell on the roof) and the filler that was used did not adhere very well. Or if no filler present, perhaps paintwork was poorly done at some point (maybe a repaint of the oxidized roof).

As far as how serious of an issue it is, personally I wouldn't care too much about it as long as the roof is not floated in Bondo.

You can tell from the wave in the line in the reflection that something hit/landed on the roof and made a slight dent and that paint chip. Someone then put some touch up paint on the chip.

Also, from the picture, it seems fairly clear that the car had a repaint.

Gosh, I'm always amazed at the knowledge on this board. Might you share how it can be observed that the car has been repainted?

Judging by the quality of this roof apex reflection, at the very least, the sunroof has been repainted :-

I would suspect the car to be the victim of a falling bullet from a gun shot vertically into the air.

Sure looks like a bad DIY touch-up on the paint chip. Rust is doubtful if the car is '75 or newer, as the entire body was galvanized.

Not a location where water would pool...just needs a better repair. If that is the extent of the paint damage I'd get busy.
