I'm not an expert, but the 2nd wire on the newer sensor is just a direct ground. So your single wire is prolly quite old and that reading is out of range. They can be a bugger to replace so you should do a search and see how it's done.

What are the symptoms 86? The reason I ask is that my 86 (as well) has an RPM needle that drops faster when cold than warmer, so I am thinking the CHT may be playing a part in this.
