Transmission case sealant question

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my early 915 mag case transmission. My question is what have people done to ensure a tight "leak-free" seal. Are the standard gasket sufficient without using additional sealant? I've seen several posts using Dow Corning RTV sealant. I can't find that locally. Can I use any standard automotive RTV sealant with the gaskets?

I suggest the Loctite 518 product - available at NAPA stores, to prep the paper gaskets.

Yeah, what Warren said. The paper gaskets are available seperately for about $1 ea. It is very easy to tear them so you might want to get a few spares.

Thanks for the help.

on the thin paper gaskets, any sealant that is going to squeeze out the sides as the parts are torqued together will most likely take the gasket with it. so go sparingly.

JWW,
Thanks for the heads up. Should I try for a thin film on both sides of the gasket as opposed to one that is as thick or thicker than the gasket itself?

I rub the 518 into the paper gasket before I put the gasket on.

just a skin coat and let it tack up is your best chance to save the gasket from blowing out.
