Check your Fuses

I was on my way to New Orleans the other day and stopped at a service station to get something to drink. When I tried to start my 911 it would not crank up.

First thing as usual to check was the fuel pump relay. I put in my spare one and it still would not start. I jumped the pins just for the hell of it and it tried to start.

I was about to get one of my friends to come get me with his trailer and remembered that I had forgot about the fuel pump fuse as the relay is usually the problem.

When I looked at it, the only thing left was the small strip of metal, the body of the fuse was gone and I found some melted plastic from it. New fuses of this type are now made of plastic and not ceramic.

The small strip of metal was barely touching the contacts and was the cause on my no start problem. The wrong fuse was also being used, probably put in by the PO. It was a 15 amp fuse and it calls for a 25 amp one.

It looks like it had been loose and making intermittent contact and due to that got hot and melted the plastic fuse body. I looked around and found the melted fuse body.

I did have to bend the fuse holder some to make the new one fit tight.
So check them old fuses and make sure they are correct and making good contact.

Good information. Typically we start thinking about the more complicated things it could be? Good reminder to start where the electricity originates. In many instances it's a fairly simple problem. Tim

A replacement fuse box using modern blade fuses is on my bucket list.

Any of the fuses you purchase from our host or from a dealership are ceramic. It's only when you buy them from an auto store that they're plastic.

Recient project. Nice to get the correct fuses in the correct locations.
