help window problem on an 88
The windows on my 1988 Carrara are not working. They seem to get stuck. When i first get in the car they will not work but I can hear a drain on the power when I try too open them. The drivers side will eventually open after 5-15 minutes, the passenger window will no longer go down. This has been going on for about 2-3 years they will work once they go down so I don't think I need a new motor. Any one out there with any idea what i can do to get the windows down? BTW they are power windows.

Relay behind the fuel gauge...try replacing it with a know good one. See if that helps. Power runs from there.
You may want to look at the relay blades for any sign of arcing. I had to clean and slightly twist mine years ago when the windows and sunroof became erratic. |
Thanks Ben I'll look at the relay tomorrow

If the above doesn't fix it, check these troubleshooting links .......

So its not the fuses, relay or the switches. The Drivers window is working as of right now but the passenger window doesn't. I think the motor is just stuck from sitting???? is there a way to manually move the window/motor on these cars???

If the motors are working my guess is the regulator is failing. Take the door cards and weather strip off and have a look. A good clean of the regulator and the window tracks might help.

I have been fighting this forever in my '89. Seems that from use, the teeth on the regulator get worn, and the motor's cog "climbs" the last tooth when closed and gets stuck there.
Usually, removing the tweeter and giving the motor cog/shaft a whack gets it unstuck. Last step I did was to change the regulator for one from a low-miles car, and so far, the issue is gone. |
Sounds like the forward and rear window tracks are not parallel. When you have the cards off, this is easily measured. On my '73, these were adjustable using the slotted bolt on the bottom of the track.

I have an 88 Carrera as well and I encountered the same problem... I removed the door panel and went to the motor . it was bound up. Not sure if this is the the right term but I coaxed the gears to move and after that there have been no problems.

If it helps here is the tech article on regulator removal. There is also a diagram further down which shows you the parts you will be looking at. You need to clean and grease all the moving part as well as check where the teeth of the motor and regulator meet. Pushing down on the window will not really identify the problem so you need to really get the panel off and have a look. Make sure you really securely tape the window to the frame to stop it dropping.
