Again, considering this is a replacement wheel I would have thought you would see high volumes on a Carrera and Turbo fitment width and offset. BTW where is the offset machined, in the USA or Spain? What are the usual lead times? I watched your info video with PCA, the radial ribs on the inner barrel are clever! Increasing the section in this area would increase the radial stiffness in this area. Small update. - I drilled all the holes in the rims. I will drill the holes for the valves this week on the mill, because the surface is curved and I dont want the drill to wander. - I mocked up a front and rear wheel. I didnt have a chance to get the rear one on the car but below is a picture of the front wheel. There is tones of brake clearance, my car has front boxster callipers. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445070877.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445070931.jpg I'll try and paint the centres this week and after the outer rims are finished drop them off at the anodizer. |

Carrera and Turbo fitments are high volume but we have had an unexpectedly large request for wide body conversion cars on non-turbo suspension. Sort of tricky those but we've figured them out. The wheels are totally built in Spain. One could say we have a testing program in Detroit with our RallyCross 911 ;) Turn around on the 17" is currently 5-6 weeks but will reduce slightly over time. Yeah, ribs are cool. Metal where it's needed most. |
A little more progress - drilled the valve holes (BBS 11.3 high pressure) on the mill. The jig I made is very useful for this process, the head was angled 20deg off vertical.
On saturday I went to Motorclassica in Melbourne, its a great show in the royal exhibition building. Notable cars was a McLaren F1, a 63 SWB 911 restored by Daniel Ricciardo's father and a gentlemen with a 356 previously raced in multiple targa events across Mexico - motorclassica http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445752185.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445752237.jpg |
I'm so jealous of the workshop access you have there. Lucky man.

Was the Ricciardo car green? We did the powdercoating on that one for the local Porsche shop which actually did the work. I think it started life as a 912, but what a fantastic result. Joe Ricciardo's involvement was probably more related to signing cheques! |
Bill...............you have a powder coating business, surely you justify some machinery for 'work'! ;). With manufacturing retracting on the east coast good machines are up for sale often, however, with the ridiculous property price growth in the last 12 months the issue is finding a suitable location to work.
It was the green car (see this page for a picture), really simple build but with a great level of detail. No doubt about the checks, these builds aren't often the home enthusiast. Made it to the anodiser today, spent some time discussing what was a close match to the factory anodising so we'll see what they come up with. |
Update
Masked the wheels ready for paint (satin black)........this was the most time consuming and frustrating part of the project. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446792546.jpg Also picked the rim outers from the anodiser: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446792660.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446792704.jpg |
Amazing work!

Very nice! Thanks for posting.

Thanks guys.
So one step forward and one step backwards....... I had a go at painting the centre's today using VHT engine primer and satin wheel paint. Unfortunately the current finish is very grainy, nearly textured and not at all what I expected. Although I followed the product instructions I wonder if I put the colour coat on too light, in some areas it looks like it might simply rub off. I'll wait a day or so to see if additional drying improves things, if not I'll look into getting them powder coated. Whats really unfortunate is I needed these things for an event in 2 weeks which a few of my mates have organised (Classic Road Trial). I've got tyres but no wheels and the all seasons currently on the car are just dangerous, looks like I'm purchasing a set of 17" Euromiesters to make the road trial... Anyway, here are two picks of the outer rim mocked up on the centre, the holes have not been aligned so ignore the odd position: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446876554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446876596.jpg |
Who did the anodising Rob?

Impressive work! Have you managed to completely assemble the wheels yet?
|
Project actually took a back burner after the paint failed. Primer stuck but the top coat looked like it had cured before hitting the wheels resulting in a powder like finish that could rub off. It was strange as the weather was 20deg c when I painted the wheel centres.
I'm now moving to San Francisco in just over a week for the foreseeable future (no Porsche till I find a way to store the car and ship it over) Fortunately one of my buddies is purchasing the wheels from me so they will come together in the very near future, i'll get him to post some pics on his car. |
This is to much awesome. Love the idea and commitment!

Simply awesome... Looks like you are doing top notch work. Thanks for sharing!!

I cant believe I started this over a year ago.
If anyone is interested this is how they turned out on my buddies car (1979 911 SC) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1479190371.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1479190383.jpg |

Excellent job. Thanks for sharing.

In trying to minimize run out, you may have luck by "clocking " the parts a few times.
