Chains are great. Especially if you wish to widen your rear flares in a random pattern.

if you want serious traction and your local laws permit it i would slap on some studded tires, i had a set on my old honda and could outrun the best 4x4s on the road
chains are only good (and safe) for speeds below 30mph in my opinion, and should one break it can cause damage you don't even want to think about on your p-car.
tirerack sells blizzaks pretty cheap and you should be able to get 2-3 winters out of them as long as you take them off once the snow is gone.

Well, for what it's worth, Porsche recommend the use of chains, and don't recommend the use of studded tyres (according to my user manual).
What I do is put the p-car in the garage and drive my parents' Jeep instead. If that breaks down (like it did last week, ), then I've always got their pickup truck to fall back on. One unexpected problem you may have in snowy conditions (other than the ones you'd expect with a tail-heavy RWD sports car) is getting stranded high and dry if someone with a big 4x4 has come along - they'll dig out two big ruts where their tyres go, and you'll get hung up on the mound of snow between the ruts... this can be a problem even in the Jeep.

Yeah, I guess that's the one perk to having parents with *really* boring tastes in vehicles...

Chains work fine on 911s.

Just make sure they're fitted tight and properly. Avoid the the really thick types as you can have clearance issues. Breakage usually happens when you use them on a tarmac stretch or if you go faster than about 30 mph.

Snow tyres work well on 911s, but I go to chains as well if conditions really deteriorate.

I used to use chains on my VW bug many years ago. Next best thing to 4 wheel drive. -- Curt
