Anybody out there running Yokohama AVS ES100's ?
 

I have read just about every tire related thread on the BBS but I didn't read any comments aboout the AVS ES100's. Anybody have them on their 911 and like them. Are they the replacement for the AVS Intermidiate? Are they any good.

I am looking for a good handling tire with a decent treadwear rating (~300). Are tires like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for?

Richard, did you buy them for your car?

I have Pirelli P700Z 205/55/ZR16's in the fronts and Pirelli P8000 Vizzola 225/50/ZR16's in the rear. I think I have a broken belt on one of the P700's so I was going to replace the fronts. The rears have very little miles on them. The tires were installed by the PO.

I have them on my NARP 944. Love them.

First, the ES100's do replace the AVS Intermediates.

Second, they are pretty much brand-new, so you won't get a ton of feedback on them yet. Try www.TireRack.com and see if they have any owner feedback.

Third, you don't always get what you pay for with tires. For instance, Sumitomo tires are really Dunlop tires (it is actually the other way around - Sumitomo owns Dunlop) at 75% the cost. In many instances with identical carcass (Dunlop SP8000 and Sumitomo HTRZ-II) the less expensive tire (in this case the Sumitomo) is actually better overall. Sumitomo spends about 5% of Dunlop's advertising budget in the States - go figure (then calculate how much it must cost to support Michelin's advertising campaign). That money has to come from somewhere.

Personally, I like Yokohama tires and would trust the ES100 to be an excellent all-around tire. If you want more performance, and are willing to put up with more road noise, get the Yokohama Sports.

re hash this old thread to see if there is any new reviews or takes. im worried about the high tread wear rating. i lived as long as i could with a 300 wear rating tire and S-canned em before they were half done. i love my avs intermeds, how does the es100 compare,, anyone?

I ordered some ES100's for the wife's GTI. I think they are a softer sidewall than traditional sports tires.
While the Sumotoma HTRZ is a good tire, it does not have the same tread as the Dunlop SP8000. Compare them side by side (I have) and you'll see. They are very similar looking though.

I have ES 100s 215 / 60 / 15 on a street only (mostly) 76 Targa. They are wearing well (Only run for 3000 + / - miles). Did one DE with them and after the initial sqirm on turn in they had good grip.

These are by no means an "R" compund tire. I even think they'd get pretty chewed up (shoulder tread) after two or three events. My car has a street alignment and if I had some chalk I could have verified I was rolling 'em over onto the Yoko letters. (kidding)

Might be interesting to hear from someone running them with a track (adjustable camber) setup. But, then again if they had that they'd probably be running "R" compounds to begin with. :)

I'd buy again for the street.

I just installed a set on my '88 Carrera last week, replacing a set of AVS Intermediates. Sized are stock - 205/55-16 front on 6" rims. 225/50-16 rear on 7" rims.

I only got 6K miles from the rear Intermediates! Fronts had 50% tread left. No DEs or track events - just hard street driving. And yes, they were worn evenly across the tread - no alignment or pressure issues.

I like the ES100s fine so far. The turn-in is a little delayed - not as immediate as the intermediates and a little disconcerting at first. They take a split second to turn in, then they really turn in. Not too hard to get used to, though.

The ES100 ride is smoother and quieter than the Intermediates.

Got caught in a thunderstorm already, and the wet grip was excellent - much better than the Intermediates.

Don't know about treadwear yet.

I've only run about 1,500 miles on myES 100's 215/60x15's on the rear and mostly spirited street driving. So far I love the way they stick and the sound is very acceptable, wear is not noticable so far. I like them enough to get rid of my Michelin fronts & put on the ES 100's in the next month or two and see how they handle in my first AX. Still in the testing mode......

The Dunlop 8000 has always reminded me of a Bridgestone RE-71. Never saw a resemblance to the HTRZ

Now the Dunlop 9000 kinda resembles the HTRZII..............

I think the ES100 is a solid tire. Grip is good (I have 205/55 and 245/45 on 7/8 wheels) and breakaway is somewhat progressive. I don't know about treadwear/longevity either as I just got mine about 500 miles ago.
