CV-joint question
 

Hi,

I had to buy two new cv-joints for my 2.4 911. No I have two new CV-Joints and two fairly good used CV-Joints. What is better, install two new CVJ on one driveshaft or use one new an an used one on either driveshaft.

Any ideas?

I'd use 1 new and 1 used on each side... so they load up at the same time (the newer ones should have less free play). And I'd put the new ones on the trans end of the shafts... no real reason, it just sounds like the right thing to do.

And swap the direction of the used CV joints.

bite the bullet and replace all four. cheaper in the long run.

"two fairly good used CV-Joints"? Either there're good or not, if there's no visible distress on the races, cage or balls, they're good joints, just clean, grease and reinstall with new boots. I'd probably put both of the new ones on one side, just to make it easier to keep track of which ones were replaced and at what age (milage). If there is any indication of wear on the used joints, replace them, don't use them at all.

That's my philisophy along with new boots. I tried to replace two but apparently the other two became jeolous and started causing problems a couple months later. No wonder cars are refered to as a "she'"

If you don't want to buy 2 more, do you have limited slip? If so I would place them on opposite sides. If no limited slip I would replace the two that are subjected to the torque of the drive train, and reverse the direction of the others.

Also you don't need to replace the bolts, but you MUST replace the shure washers and torque to specs.
