A dousing with simple green, a bit of agitation with a stiff paint brush and the blasting it off with this:

The steam cleaner is the key.

Do tell. Why so over a pressure washer or even just scrubbing and a hose?

My engine is coming out soon and my plan is to put the engine stand on my trailer, use a cherry picker engine lift to mount the engine on it, and take it to the self-serve car wash. I'll soak it in Simple Green for a few hours before blasting it off.

Heat, a powerful jet of steam and very little left over water. It also just melts the grease away.
