New Owner & Introduction
Last weekend I finally made the leap and purchased my first air-cooled 911. The car is a 1980 Weissach model in Black Metallic. Its been converted to Webers and I assumed they were 40IDAs. Once I got it home, I found out they were actually 40IDS 3C/3C1.
I drained 15 gallons of old fuel from the tank and flushed fresh fuel and Seafoam through everything, and the car fired right up. The jets were plugged and accel pump diaphrams shot so, it wouldn't stay running. Kits are ordered and the carbs are off for rebuild. The paint and wheels are original and in very good condition. The plan is to get it running, make it safe, and enjoy it. The story is much longer but, I didn't want to bore everyone on my first post. More pics and progress to come. Thanks for listening! Looking forward to the story and more pics. Black is quite classy, and surprisingly unusual for these air-cooled cars.

Welcome from a Schwartz Metallic owner too!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445444286.jpg

Nice - somewhat unusual color combo on the Fuchs wheels and center caps. The gold wheels and black center caps are original? They look sharp, from what is visible in the photo.

That wheel color was part of the Weissach package. I plan to restore the finish but, I didn't expect It would be so difficult finding 15" tires.

Just an FYI on your 40IDS3C carbs. They are carbs that have an enrichment circuit originally for cars like the '67S. I don't know what other cars they came on. I sold a pair several months ago for $2K and had offers for $3+k, but stuck with the original price because that was what I advertised them for - not knowing they were worth much more. A couple of months ago another guy sold (supposedly) a set to a guy in Germany for $6K+. So if you want to change over to a nice set of PMO's or something else, you might be able to sell those carbs for that and then some.

Marv makes a VERY good point.
Those IDS's are worth a LOT of money and you might consider selling them and installing either a pair of Paul Abbott's rebuilt Webers (Performance Oriented) or a set of PMO's. |
Welcome & congrats! Looking forward to your back story on the car.

Welcome aboard!

I wouldn't use sea foam in them. if you do and don't drive it it will eat up all the rubber and send it all through your fuel system. Then you are looking at rebuilding them again. Flush it all out and start with fresh gas. You can use it but run the car and burn it all out. Use fresh gas.

Thanks for the input everyone. I did a little research and was surprised at the value of these carbs. Actually, I'd like to hear opinions about modern EFI kits that are available. I've run Webers for many years on VWs but, would like fuel injection on this car. Any experience or recommendations?
The carb kits arrived yesterday and I'm looking forward to getting them back on the car. I appreciate the feedback on the seafoam. I'll be sure to run it out and get fresh fuel in the system. There's plenty more work to come I'm sure. Everything mechanical needs to be checked. Let the fun begin. Rob |
I'm reassembling the carbs and noticed that of the three emulsion tubes in each carb, one is different than the other two. It has an extra hole near the bottom.
Does anyone know which specific location this unique tube should be installed? Thanks in advance. I'll try to get some pics. Rob |
