Idle speed on an '84
 

I put a new O2 sensor on pocketrocket about 2 weeks ago as part of working through the 60,000 mi. service. When I did I noticed that the idle droped down to about 600 rpm. I gave the idle adj. screw on the throttle body a crank to the left and it brought the idle back up to about 850. As I was coming back to work from lunch I noticed the idle had gone up to 1000.

Is this normal with a new sensor? Also how do I properly set the idle? I know that you are should junper 2 pins in the test connector, but that is all I know.

Any help is appreciated.

use a round black relay, like the ones on the front fuse panel. pop the cover off and plug it in the test plug. push the top switch closed with your finger as you compare idle speed with and without pushing it. the speeds should be the same. adjust the throttle screw as necc. do it at normal operating temp.

Is the low idle expected on these DME cars?

I noticed when my O2 was disconnected, my idle sat EXACTLY at 900 RPM (spec is 850 +/- 50 rpm). Reconnecting the O2 causes my idle to sit around 600 too. So I am curious to know if this is correct/normal?

600 is a bit low. 800-850 is what you should shoot for. airflow meter cars seem to idle faster after they have been driven a while. do the speed adjustment then. 1.8 914s did that too.
