Auto Fixing Pleasures
Usually, working on the 911 is fun - sometimes it's a pain - but knowing a little about cars was a pretty cool thing last night.
It was dark & snowing like crazy, and I walked down the wrong aisle in the mall parking lot. Stumbled upon a bunch of teenagers standing around some open car hoods. The cars were facing each other - probably a dead battery, I thought. The group seemed to be confused as how to use the jumper cables. Then I saw that two of the kids were smoking. Yikes! Needless to say, got the cigarettes out, told everyone how to use the cables (amazing how most people don't even know how to jump a car), and wound up helping a grateful old lady and her middle-aged daughter (in the rescue car) get home. Even got to pass along some knowlege that those kids can use to help someone someday, and chat about cars for a few minutes. Happy Thanksgiving! And Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!

Jumper cables can pinch fingers too - very dangerous!!!
But seriously, I thought stories about hydrogen escaping from batteries were overblown (sorry for the pun) until a friend showed me the scars on his face from peering in a little too closely at the filler caps with a lit cigarette in his mouth. Never been as comfortable with batteries since.
