911 Gulf Rally car

I've always loved the Porsche Safari Rally cars especially the Martini and Rothmans sponsored cars. Since both of theses cars have already been artfully cloned, I decided to go a different way. What if Gulf Racing had sponsored a Rally team as well as the ground pounding 908's. A friend of mine told me of a DE car that was available a bit of a track rat but much of the heavy lifting had already been done. The car drove great, lots of power, and the price was right. So I have a new project

The starting point a 1977 911S

From the seller:
These are older photos new one would show European headlights H4
the usual mod pop off valve
pressure fed chain tensioner
2.7l cis engine with 3.0l intake manifold S cam rebuild 5000 miles ago
heat works( as you know )
breakerless ignition 16x7 and 16x8 fuchs wheels with extra set of fuchs 16x8 and 16x9 if wanted
original leather seats included
extra front cross drilled rotors
suspension rebuilt less than 1000 miles bilstein as seen in pictures
turbo valve cover with heat shields
turbo tie rod and adjustable f and r sway bar
poly urethane engine and transmission mounts
Hargett shifter
shock tower brace (Renn Line)
free flow intake with K&N filter
magna core ignition wire
back dated exhaust (loud)
roll bar bolted in
sc flare on 1977 body
fiberglass ducktail and rear engine cover
fiberglass yellow bird bumpers by MA Shaw

Gulf 964

I just got my 964 back from the wrap shop after an epic week of way more hours than they expected getting it perfect. More pictures will be coming soon but I would appreciate any feedback on it. This is culmination of months of thinking and designing. I know that some of the sponsor decals would probably not go together, but my purpose was to bring together decals that I like to create the final package. A Dunlop or AGIP windshield banner is still to come. My dad raced go karts and the number 4 is ingrained in my memory. No racing planned for this one as it is all original and much loved.

911 Gulf Rally car

First step was to remove what remained of the interior. I installed an ApBiz RS carpet kit
Big job but very satisfying.

Next I painted the wheels. I love the look tempted to just stop there... but I can't.

I carried the wheel coloring to the script and the 911 designation on the back hood.

Rob,

Great project concept.

Do you plan to delete the sunroof? That would (as you know) rid the car of almost 40 lbs and achieve the desired look. Blending the roof paint into the A and C pillar is easy or you could get creative with painting just the roof area gulf orange.

I have found it very easy (using the removed sunroof panel as curvature guide) to shape a light steel sunroof delete panel out of the same ga steel on leather sand bag. Little filler is required but much block sanding is needed in all directions.

I remember the last time i had to skim coat and re sand 8 times to get it perfect.

Good luck and i look forward to your results

Pics did not insert sorry..
second pic is some track support sheet metal which along w track mech really adds up.

You must fill all with weld but go slowly around to different areas or there will be over heating and warping.

I'm not going to remove the sunroof, although its heavy it also a nice source of ventilation in a non A/C car.

I'm building more of an event car than competition car. I plan on using to do things like the "Targa California" events that can get dirty, muddy.

These are my other cars,

Good choice to keep the sunroof Rob. With a non-AC car I've found the sunroof will keep things tolerable when it gets hot, and not being a dedicated race car, you won't notice any difference for the kind of driving you have planned for it. The opening rears are a bonus too.

Looking forward to seeing the tweaks you have planned.

I'm keeping the interior simple, took out the Sparcos ( Made a driving simulator for my kid) replacing them with ST seats from TRE. Ordered this tartan from Scottish weavers, enough for the seats and door panels.

It will look something like this.

Here is a mock-up of the Gulf Wyer 908/3 livery. The arrows originally started at rear naca ducts and moved forward. Starting at the tail lights seemed like a good option.
On another note: I believe these arrows and suits of cards were taken from Richthofen's Flying Circus squadron. I would be interested if anyone has any further knowledge on the roots of this cool livery.

Thanks Don.
I decided on the two arrows with the green intake. I like the symmetry of the design and it flows nicely from front to back.

So here are the Gulf graphics from Dan at https://magnagrafik.com/

At the time I place the order I hadn't yet decided to go with Orange or green ( PORSCHE) for the rear reflector so I ordered both. Decision time .... opinions??

put them both on separate reflector panels, they are easy to swap.
