1983 911SC asking price????
looking at an 83 SC, 86K perfect condition, paint original and like new, sport seats leather pefect, interior perfect. all updates, new tires, recent service. all records since new.
is 17K an OK price for this car. i have been looking at a 1978 for around 15-same miles but not as good cosmetically. thinking the newer car is worth a bit more. should i worry about the mileage? thanks |

I bought a very nice '83 coupe recently with slightly higher miles for $12k. A gentleman that I know sold his very nice (sounds like the one you are describing) '83 coupe with low miles and sport seats about a month ago for $15k. I think $17k is ok but probably a bit high. I'd offer $14.5k an bargain up from there if the PPI checks out ok.

That's pretty high given today's market (ie soft). It does depend where in the country you are though. In SoCal, if the car was clean it would probably max out at $15K, but it depends how long the buyer wants to wait around.

i'm on the east coast now and it doesn't seem like there are that many around. missed an 82 last week that ended up going for 19K. it had like 62K on the odo. seems like as long as the 83 has been looked after an extra 20K miles over twenty years isn't necessarily a bad thing.

well, the bottom line is if the car checks out on PPI and you *really* like it (color, etc), then paying a premium price is no big deal. 6 months from now the figure washes away (especially after dumping some money into parts, etc), and you've got all that time of driving with a stoopid grin on your face.

$17k sounds reasonable to me if a proper and thorough Pre-Purchase Inspection is done (IMO mandatory). Make sure the leak down, compression, and broken head stud check is done and be advised of any oil leak$. Subtract any costs for repairs and then make the offer. I think the '83 model (final year for the sc) is definitely worth $2k more than the '78. Is this car a coupe or targa? I'm always curious about the details. Can you post any pics?
Good luck! Mark

should i be worried about the miles? it seems worth it to me to pay a little more for a car that needs nothing and has been serviced religiously.

Get a PPI. If it checks out, and you realize you may be paying a little more but the car is exactly what you want, buy it. It is difficult to find a car exactly like you want. Seems like people who by stock cars make mods and guys who by cars with mods what to return them to stock.
Personally, I think all P-cars 89 and earlier are under valued. It's the replacement parts that are overpriced. (May I add at no fault of our host, who actually attempts to make them reasonable. )

Not sure this help, but I bought an '83 Cabriolet with about 50k mikes for $24k about one year ago. Paid a premium for cab, and outside of tires needed very little with a lot of upgrades. No regrets!

That sound high to me. I have been scouring the want ads to replace my P_car, and the market for P-cars seems to be ALL over the place right now. definitely a buyers market.

You might guess that I consider the '83 SC to be a most excellent car. And you'd be correct. It has features and upgrades, compared to earlier SCs, that justify a premium. I paid $13.5K for mine just over three years ago, with 135K miles. The market is a little softer now, but I suspect the cars with the most depressed prices would be the later ones, such as 993. I think low-teens is a pretty solid value for these cars, in good shape. In other words, I think the value is there. Even if it were not a Porsche. It's just worth that much, mechanically.

Actually Superman - the 993's 996's and Boxters are taking the biggest hit from my view. That's a pretty steep depreciation curve. I think the Boxter is the worse I have seen. Lots of cars availavle, and lots of cars sitting!

Well, if it's in truly stunning shape and needs nothing, it's a fine price. I just paid $18.5 for my 90K-mile, outrageous-condition silver '78 targa with a 3.2, twin-plugged Carrera heads, Electromotive electronic ingition, SSI's, stainless old-style muffler, 16"'s, all Carrera engine updates, $6K paint 6 years ago, perfect interior, 930S wheel, and Targa top, trunk, etc. It presents and drives like new.
The mods are all very worthwhile on this car, and all things I'd have done had I bought a car without them--specially the engine. That would have run me $10K+ alone--meaning I'd never have done it. Of course, the thing is as fast as the last stock '79 930 I drove, too. So, condition and worthwhile upgrades are certainly worth a premium.

6 months ago I paid 15k for a 120k miles '83 Targa.
Since it was the right colour and body style I do not care if I paid a premium or not, given that Spain is a limited market for Porsches. As the good Dr. Static said before, the premium dilutes over time. |

$15,000 is a fair price for the car. Once you break the $15,000 barrier 84-85 Carreras have to be considered.

I paid $14.5K for my '86 coupe, but had the po replace all synchros and complete the major service (124K miles). I agree, though, that the price means little six months later. It is best IMHO to fix everything up-front. Costs a bit more, but you can sure feel it when you drive.....

If it's a nice car and it's what you are looking for and it is somewhat close .. I'd give 17k for it paid that much for my 78 and it has been a trouble free car for two straight years.. driven everyday.. so go for it.. if she is a solid car...

I think $17k is about $2-3k too high. This based on my $15k purchase early last year of an 83 Targa with 86k miles - very similar description of what you're looking at in terms of overall shape. The PO of nine years had NEVER folded the top, and the leather seats had always had seat covers - I removed them after the test drive to get a look - excellent shape. It did not have the tensioner update, but I have done that since ($400 in parts).
The market is rather soft right now. WHEN, not IF, the PPI is performed, something will surface that is needed. Use the results to bring the price down near $14.5k - like Dr. Brad said.
