Free Porsche For the Right Person (please read)
I know this is not 911 related but this sub-forum gets the most traffic by far and Im looking for some P-Car Community help on this one so please read on, mods; if you feel this belongs on another sub forum please move as necessary, I would appreciate this being a sticky for a little while if at all possible. Im asking for community help here to circulate this to anyone you may feel is a fit, please read if you are interested.
The Story: When I was in high school I was a bit of a lost 17 year old. With only two minivans in the family to drive my cool car options were about as close to 0 as you can get. A friend of the family had an older 924S that had stoped running on him. He really didn't care about the car anymore as it was basically a beater and I jokingly asked him if I could have it. He was excited to get it off his hands as it was just sitting around and I was excited for a project. Im pretty sure my parents had no faith I could actually get the car running as it was in fairly rough shape so they let me embark on the project with few questions asked. After a few months, and much to everyones surprise, I got the car running. Places like pelican and similar forums were a huge help and I really learned what it meant to be part of the P-Car community. In a lot of ways the car gave me meaning, purpose, direction or what ever you want to call it, the car had a huge effect on my life at the time and the trajectory my life would ultimately follow. Its hard to put into words exactly how important this all was to me but Im pretty confident I would not be who I am or where I am today without this experience. The Situation: It does not really feel right to sell the car or junk it considering how important it was to me so Im going to give it away to someone. Id like to see this car go to a young kid not all to unlike myself; thinking back to who I was when I received this car. Ive always be a fan of the idea that you never really own a vintage car you are just the caretaker of it for a while. I wont lie the car is in rough shape as its been sitting for a while but it has a clean title and is a classic "ran when parked" (it does not start right now as far as I know). My hope is that this Porsche can go on to someone else that it can have a positive impact for like it did for me a decade ago. The PIF (Rules And Regs) Other forums have the idea of a PIF (Pay It Forward) where you give stuff away usually at random or based on some submission criteria. So here is the situation to enter: Write an email (or attach a letter) to davesoldporsche@gmail.com outlining a bit about yourself and why you would be a good next owner of the car considering its history. Im not looking for anything specific here, its free form, go for it. A few things to know before submitting - The car is located in Westchester NY please make sure you have reasonable ability to move the car from its current location to where ever you are - You are responsible for picking the car up from where it currently resides, it does not run and can not be driven away it will need to be towed. Typically these cars are too low for a classic tow truck and require either a flatbed or a flat trailer (UHaul offers what you need) - Please only apply if you are serious about the car and continuing its life, if you are just gonna part it out for profit this is not what you are after I am actually trying to help some stranger here. - I reserve the right to end this offer at any time and may not ultimately pick someone for this car to go to, this giveaway is my decision to execute as I see fit. - No purchase necessary to enter or what ever that disclaimer is for this kind of stuff - Id like to see this car go to someone who will at least attempt to work on it, id prefer this not become a 24 hours of lemons car... FAQ: Why are the wheels blacked out? - The car currently sits on a different set of rims than it will come with. I have the original phone dials but need to get some rubber for them, this will be sorted before pickup. Does the car have a clean title? - Yes the car has a clean, transferable NY title Why am I getting rid of the car - Its time for it to have a new home, ive got other P-Cars in the stable that are getting all my attention and wrench time these days so its time this serves its role for someone else. What kind of car is this exactly - This is a 1988 Porsche 924S (924 body with a 944 motor). Black on Black with the three gauge dash, leather seats, mostly original. Has a rebuild DME (Done when i was first working on the car and was the original issue). ![]()

Dave, this is super cool. Will follow this story with interest. As the submissions are going to your email directly, from time to time please post an update. Who knows? Maybe I’ll run in to you in Westchester some day…

Please keep us posted on the 924/44/68 PP Forum. Maybe some of us would have some spare/leftover parts to donate.

A nice gesture and I hope it goes to a good home.
My closest brush with a 924: A few years ago I was offered one by a slight acquaintance who was moving and said they knew I would be able to restore it… just make a reasonable offer. I told them I’d take $2000 for it and pick it up later that week. When they asked if I was serious, I said “OK, I’ll take $2,500, but that’s my final offer”. They didn’t think it was too funny. [This is by no means me saying they are not desirable cars! I simply was in no position to take on another automobile and was having fun with them. The car could have been any make or model.] Hopefully some kid will have the same positive experience you did with it.

Super cool!
Many years ago, I did something similiar - I put my Audi Fox up for adoption. It went to a good home. I hope this 924 finds a great new home too. |

Years ago, I gave my Lotus Europa to the local high school shop class. Not sure if I was doing them much of a favor actually.
At the same time I swore to never own another English car, and that headed me down the road to many years of happy Porsche ownership…
