windsheild washer pump issue
I am reconnecting my windshield washer that was disconnected by previous owner on my 85 carrera. I connected everything, and wondering if the first tube that comes through the body towards the back of the car goes on the drivers side pump inlet/outlet or does it go to the T fitting that then connects to the passenger side of the pump?
I had test fit everything and had the drivers side sprayer jet disconnected and the tube just sticking out and the passenger side connected, when I used it it sprayed out of each (I forget now if I had the first tube going to the pump or the T) When I reinstalled everything with the first tube going to the T and the jet connected, the pump runs but nothing is coming out of either side. I am now wondering if there is an issue with one of the check valves but wanted to figure out if I have it connected properly before messing with those. The positive side of the pump is connected to the correct wire by the way.

My original 44000miles 84 Carrera, the same when i received it,still had all the original
washer check valves, none of the washers worked,so i cut the drivers side L check valve off first, sure enough when i went to blow though it was completely bloked so i just fitted vacuum hose connections, T and L replaced all mine work great now,the correct check valves are available from our host ,i think about $6.00 $7.00 each.Be careful when connecting new hose to spray nossle, these can snap off when old and brittle.Sorry no photo of old valves they were green colour trashed them a year ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

make sure your fluid is topped out. It is designed to run out of headlight washer fluid long before windshield washer fluid. If it gets low your headlight washer wont spray but your windshield still will.
BTW the only function of the headlight washer I have found is to make the car filthy .. ![]()

Thanks. I actually had purchased that same box of fittings. Can someone explain check their Carrera and tell me which tube coming through the fender goes to the driver side pump inlet/outlet?? The line that comes through the wheel well closer to the front of the car or the one just behind it that comes through the wheel well just behind it towards the rear.
A picture of the correct pump setup would be ideal. Thanks!

Well, I dropped the reservoir tank a little to remove the cap and pulled the line out, as you can see there was a bunch of gunk that had clogged the filter attachment. My solution was to scrap it clean and cut a piece of window screen, wrap it as a small bulb around the filter with a couple zip ties, put it back together and voila, splash.
I will order the filter part and pop it in next time I have the wheels off. I just wanted to get it ready for my safety. Wow, those headlight washers really to blast the headlights and rest of the car. Oh, and the back bottom hole where the lines come through the wheel well is the one the goes to the driver side of the pump. ![]()
