Post ^%&*(^() connector !

I'm troubleshooting the cold-start on my 77. Wanted to check the connections on the cold-start valve, but can't see how to release the cable connector from the valve.
How does this thing come apart?

Never mind - I pulled off the air horn (?) between throttle body and the metering plate body and reached back between them.
Still not entirely sure whether there's a simple (cheap) way to tell if one of the components in the system is malfunctioning.

The cold-start valve and Thermo-Time switch are easily tested ...

Just what other 'components in the system' are you referring to ... the wires to/from starter solenoid, the ignition switch? That's it for the cold start 'system!'

Warren,
I was considering the following:
Warm-up regulator,
Auxiliary Air Valve,
Auxiliary Air Regulator
along with the cold-start valve and thermo-time switch. Part of the problem is I'm only getting started on this project and still not great at identifying all the parts in-situ.
I have a feeling I may have forgotten at least one or two others that I know are hanging on the engine somewhere, but I don't have any of my diagrams or notes here at work.

I also haven't found a simple set of troubleshooting instructions. Lots of general information out there.

BTW, once warmed up she runs beautifully, at least to my (Porsche-) inexperienced sensibilities.

I'm thinking my next step will be to de-mount the cold-start valve and make sure it isn't gummed up or otherwise not operational. The car's been sitting for years so it's possible the valve isn't doing anything.
Will keep y'all posted.

Michael, It's basically hard to start when the engine's cold. What's been most effective has been to bump the starter repeatedly for ~1/2 a second at a time at 2-10 second intervals. About half the time the response is a momentary catch, the engine revs to maybe 3K and dies. The rest of the time, it doesn't catch at all.
After 10-12 cycles of this the engine doesn't die completely but stumbles along at 500 RPM or so, with some backfiring and misfiring. After a couple minutes it smooths out and I can ease out onto the street, being careful to limit the amount of gas pedal I apply. Within a couple of block she's running smoothly and pulls strongly and smoothly once fully warmed up.
Warm start requires a single 1-2 second burst on the starter and everything is fine.
Points, plugs, cap, and rotor are new. Timing is set to spec.
What else would it be helpful to know?

sounds like the cold start system is working if it starts, regardless if it then dies. it's only function is to fire off the engine, then it's out of the system. after the engine starts, it's the job of the warmup regulator to allow it to continue to run. if the regulator starts off too lean, the engine has a hard time running until it warms up.

Dave,

Do you have a Haynes manual? It has plenty of pics and specific info on the CIS system.

Warren, I have and will take another look at it. My recollection is that it didn't have much specific in the way of "...do this, look for that result..." kind of troubleshooting help I was hoping for.
Do you agree with John walker that the WUR is a more likely place to look? It looks more complicated, but at least it's easier to reach.

Local Borders bookstore is holding a copy of Probst's book for me. Will try to pick it up tonight or tomorrow morning.
