Picture of Front Fender Seam with Panel Tape Installed Correctly
 

Could someone post a picture of what the seam looks like between the front fenders and front cowl with panel tape (or "dum-dum") installed correctly? The previous owner on my car mucked it up when he did it, and now my car is going out to the body shop to get repainted.

There s/b a plastic gasket in there. In theory, the gasket can be removed without pulling the fender.

No putty from what I saw when dismantling my 81. However that is one car and it was early 2000's. An old man can forget.

You can buy a gasket that has an oversized visible bead on it.

The gasket. I do not think the factory cars had any sealer or goop in there. it's a gasket. IIRC, it's flat, with a round bead at the top. Been a few years since I reinstalled my fenders though.

To install that (I just did it) you do have to remove/loosen the two bolts in the door jamb that hold the fender, and at least 1-2 in the frunk. Then put a plastic trim tool or wrapped screwdriver into the seam and pry it open enough to cram the welting in, assembly is reverse of disassembly.

The "dum-dum" stuff doesn't go there. The welting goes there. That spot will have nothing but the welting.

This link - the whitish bits are the dum-dum stuff. You can see that the top edge that you are pointing to in your pic doesn't have the sealant (just the welting). go to the pic that shows the back side and scroll your mouse over it to enlarge.

Looks like someone might have put some foam insulation tape in there rather than source the correct welting. The factory typically used dum-dum under the windshield seal to get a good fit but never in body seams.

As Gordon's pics show for the welting. From that point to the headlight is a fender tape that keeps moisture out of that area. You'll need to pull that fender and clean out all of what appears to be rust out of there. If you don't and it's rust you'll have nothing put problems. Ask to see fender if someone else is doing the work before they reinstall. Good luck.

The welting on my car only runs along the cowling. It ends at the trunk seal's corner. From there to the front of the fender there was body sealant used between the fender and the inner trunk body.

Thank you so much for this thread. I noticed the cowling (welting) coming up on the left fender of my 88 Carrera. I struggled to find the correct name for the part and after finally getting it I had no real clue as to how to remove the cracked one and replace it with the new one.

One question though- does anyone know what size the hex head bolts are securing the fender?

I think 10mm head buy 6mm.
