Tap c'clockwise on the "ear" of the retainer with a punch. It's a friction fit. It'll spin off.

I'll give it a try, but it looks to me like the three tabs around the shaft in the middle fit into a groove in the shaft. Seems like the kind of thing that would be easy to install just by whacking it over the shaft, but I'm at a loss how to pry back all three tabs at once.

You're correct....it rotates in the groove in the shaft....it's not supposed to come off in use. It's a very clever securing system. Once the inner half of the adjuster wheel is aligned/oriented correctly...you rotate the part you are asking about removing....so that the metal "ears" ride over the plastic molded lobes of the the inner half of the adjuster wheel.
Why are you trying to remove it? You aren't trying to get the inner half of the wheel off- so you can get the plastic cover hiding the bolts that fasten the seat cushion to the seat back are you? You turn that fastener with the edge of a blade screw driver - in one position it secures the inner half of the adjuster wheel and in the other position.....it allows the inner half to be slid over it. That part remains on the shaft when the seat is disassembled. JT |

CP,
Sorry, I mispoke, JT is correct, that's how you get the large black adjusting knob off and on, but you knew that. Why do you want to remove that piece anyway? |
