I saw that the other day. It is inconceivable to me how someone could own a Porsche for 25 years and only put 1600 miles on it. Actually, that car scares me more than a car that has been driven regularly. How many times do you think the oil has been changed? Brake fluid? Transmission fluid? All of these need to be changed somewhat regularly, even if the car is not being driven.

As it has been pointed out before, these cars are not investments so what's the point of driving it so little?
I don't know what they went for new back in 79 but this owner can't make much if anything on it.
What a collasal waste of a car for 23 years!

What a terrible investment. The $28,000 paid for this car invested at a very conservative 5% would be worth close to $120,000. Cars are lousy investments but if you must consider your purchase as an investment, buy an appreciating asset vs. a depreciating one. Otherwise, buy what the hell you like and forget what everyone else (including me) says!

someone in Maine should buy it, then drive it home, and watch the look on the owner's face...

"The reserve is very high on this car because I am confident you will find no better 911 SC Targa or 911 SC coupe this nice in the world. "

ummm....since this is a Targa he's selling, wouldn't *any* coupe be better?

Sure the P7's don't have any cracks - how about the fuel lines?

(Wish the brick throwing smile worked today!)

My dad had a 54 Corvette with only 17,000 miles on it that was a 100 pt show car (back in the 80's) The guy who bought it paid cash and drove it away... IN THE RAIN. My dad offered to deliver the car, or even ship it. The guy who bought it paid cash and didn't seem to care.

The guy who brokered the deal was a friend of my dads and had to calm him down when he saw what the guy was doing to his car.

I don't know what happened to the car, but It sure lost a heck of a lot of value in a 15 min. time period.

Later!

Chuck

Makes me think of the car that won the Preparation class at this years Porsche Parade in Boise. It was a 2002 996 that as soon as the competition finished the car was encased in plastic wrap and I assumed trailered to the next competition.

This struck me for a number of reasons;
1. If you are going to do a concours preparation, isn't it at least part of the challenge to have something to prepare? I cannot imagine a one year old car, even if it was driven (and I am sure this 996 never has been) would have many problems to remedy. This targa fits the same description.

2. Isn't it the point to drive these cars? I can understand rare cars and investment cars or spare cars that only go out on nice weekends but the motivation behind the design of a Porsche is the pleasure from driving one. The targa in question averaged 70 miles a year.

Some museums should keep a couple of 911's for the future.

Private owners should drive!

What an idiot.

That is such a waste of potential. And a bad investment.

What I find ridiculous is that if you went to Porsche in Germany, bought a new car, immediately encased it in plastic, then unwrapped it at a concours... you wouldn't win because it isn't clean enough or "factory" enough...

You said it Adrian... and Todd, you beat me to it!

Now if agent 00R would only come see us in B-branch for some REAL spy equipment. He wouldn't have been discovered during the infiltration if he'd had a proper roof!

What a waste of really good garage space.

And say he gets's his $25K for it. What is that... $2.14 per mile... and lost opportunity cost of $120,000.

Makes me want to drive it, then drive it home in the rain - but not on those tires!

I sent the owner an e-mail asking what the reserve was. He responded by saying all he would say is that it's in excess of $30,000.

So, let me see if I have this right. He pays $30k for the car, doesn't drive it, and 24 years later he *might* make his money back. Sounds like voodoo economics to me.
