Where does one get a vehicle history report by VIN #? Carfax requires a 17 digit VIN. I read somewhere that Kardex (sp?) takes 4 weeks? Also, how about original color codes for a 74 - either on line or a book I can purchase? BTW, the VIN of the car is 9114112645.
Thanks, Tim |

Tim,
Carfax is useless for older cars with the 'old-style' numeric VINs! Some people swear by the 'redbook' for paint codes ... but, it is not error-free! The best source is the factory paint manual. The factory service manuals have plenty of info on paint codes for some years, but it is not entirely complete. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

Tim,
Interesting, my 74's last four are 2650, just 5 vehicles from yours. Mine's a red targa. ------------------ Dan S. 1974 911 Targa |

Well, the 911 Red Book by Pstrick Paternie is a good portable reference. Peter Morgan's Original Porsche 911 is another good source on options and features available by model. For a "carfax" style vehicle history, though, you're out of luck - there's no such animal for the older cars. The Kardex sheet you're talking about is the equivalent of a reprint of the original invoice or Monroney label on modern cars - it won't tell you where the car's been, but it will tell you how it started out.

Sounds like I am going to have to rely on the PPI and visual inspection (I will fly from CA to TX) of this car.
I guess I will have to find a Porsche mechanic via yellow pages since I didn't get a response to one in the Richmond/Houston area. |

You might want to call the main PCA office for a shop referral. Your VIN shows the car to be one of the later `74 Targa's out of 3110 produced from August 1973 to July 1974. Also, the factory (standard) exterior paint codes for 1974 were as follows:
027-guards red 042-peru red 116-signal orange 117-light yellow 137-lime green 156-orange 336-mexico blue 408-bitter chocolate 516-sahara beige 908-grand prix white -Eric |

Thanks Eric. The car I'm looking at is a charcoal grey, so clearly not an original color. Too bad.
