Why change rubber brake hoses
Original Ate 1987 hose
At fitting and mid hose, but still the brakes felt fine under normal street driving. I think with new hoses I SHOULD FEEL better pedal.

Good thread. I learned about bad hoses in a 1969 MGB whose rotors after a short run glowed in the dark. Don't trust anything but a date on rubber items.

If you've dealt with older cars for long this is a given and the first thing you change out if unknown.
Flush the system, change out all brake hoses, inspect brake system. They can look great from the outside after years on the road.

This is not just a phenomenon for old cars. I had a brake line on a 2002 A6 fail a couple months ago. No indication of external damage - just failed at a swaged end.

Ah, 2002 is 13 years old....may not seem old to you but for a brake line that is old. How often do you change brake fluid...every 2 years, you could work a flex line change in in 13 years.
