Need help to determine 911SC front shock
Dear forum
I have (also) started a complete suspension rebuild on my '79 911SC, and now looking for new front shock absorbers. The car is a European coupe. However, I have a problem determining the right type of shock, any help is appreciated :) The struts have no roll pin at bottom, so they are not Bilstein, The struts are painted black, which makes me think they are Boge type (according to Wayne's article). From Koni's website, the insert for Boge structs look like this: http://findershop.koni.com/com/en/popup?img=/img/products/86-1943.jpg While the insert for Koni struts look like this: http://findershop.koni.com/com/en/popup?img=/img/products/86-1942.jpg I have attached a picture of the cars shock, which looks closest to the Koni strut type above - it does not have the small "tap" at the bottom. My questions to you experts are therefore: Which strut type do I have, Boge or Koni ? Which shock would be the right one to buy ? Unlike the Koni's, the Bilstein gas shocks for Boge struts (34-001134) does not appear to have the small "tap" at the bottom, which makes me even more confused: Pelican Parts - Product Information: 34-001134-M712 Your help is much appreciated ! /Peter (from Denmark) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446625013.jpg |
Hi forum
Trying again :-) Has anybody come across a shock absorber like the one on the picture ? If so, what strut type do you have ? Boge or Koni ? Thanks ! /Peter |
a better picture of the top might help
looks like a stock Boge insert for an Sc , I replaced mine with Bilstien sport inserts. |
Sure...hope this helps.
The large nut that holds the shock in the strut has been removed on this picture. Appreciate your help ! /Peter http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446665962.jpg |
Show us the end cap aka GLAND NUT, is it a ID thread or a OD thread? In 1986 ( maybe mid 1985 they went with the Sport Carrera type with ID thread ). PO updated mine with an 1986+ type spindle and housing marked BOGE. Mine was made 1st half of 85.

It looks like the internal tube of a shock insert. In other words the outer tube of the shock is still in the strut?
Show us a picture of your strut. |
Thanks, very helpful
The big locking nut clearly goes *into* the strut. Inspired by the pics, I just cleaned up the strut: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446668990.jpg It appears to be a Boge type 911-341-011 (00) If you look down the strut, it appears empty, except for some sleeve or reinforcement at the bottom 1/3. If you look closely at this picture, you may be able to see it: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446669101.jpg Do you think this is a part of the insert that is stuck down there ? Again, much appreciated ! /Peter |
Correction: Strut type is 911-341-041-00

Perfect, then you would use this type:
Boge or Bilstein http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...psv2xkrp4o.jpg Far as the insert, I do not recall having one in mine but mine is a 86+ Make sure you put couple of coats of paint on the area you stripped off :D to avoid rust |
So, you have a Boge strut. Just buy inserts designed to fit Boge Struts. Part #34-001127-M512 for Bilstein HD to fit Boge struts. The HD is similar in firmness to the original. Bilstein Sports would be stiffer; part#34-001134-M712. There are other brands to fit the Boge strut too. Boge, KYB, Koni etc. Our host sells these products.
