What's Wrong with my Aero Mirrors?
 

Porsche Experts,

I purchased a set of factory aero mirrors for my '86 Coupe, but when I bolt them on they seem to be angled downward too much. Additionally, in their normal position the mirror doesn't even adjust inward enough so that I can see the appropriate section on either side of the car. So I have to angle to entire mirror body inward on the pedestal to use them.

The p/n's are 965.731.241.01 (driver) and 965.731.242.00 (passenger). Can someone help me understand what the issue might be? Thanks in advance. (BTW, in the picture there's no gasket because i put the mirror on just for the photo.) Thanks in advance.

Can someone who has aero mirrors chime in, pretty please? If you look at the first photo, you can see how steep the angle is by the top of the housing, which I don't understand. TIA.

It certainly looks weird. Just happened to have this pic on my desktop, little dark but you can see how it should sit.

Wild guess here but is it possible you got a set from a RHD car? Or a different Porsche model? If you look at only the base, you can see that it's completely different.

You have most likely the wrong mirror bases from 968. If I am right you will need to search for 911 (964/965/993) aero bases.

I considered the fact that they may be for a RHD car (although the dismantler said they were removed from a LHD car), but how would that change the angle of the mirrors to the body.

The idea that they're for a different model seems more likely but if they were for a 968 would they still have part numbers that start with 965.....?

I'm going to say 968 bases as well. I accidentally ordered the wrong bases for my 993 and though they may look similar, they're completely different.
Also, dismantling the base from the mirror body is a real PITA. I'd personally sell the 968 mirrors and look for some 993 units, if that indeed the problem you have.

Ditto on the 968 base.

The feet are not all that difficult to replace, done it several times, not fun but do-able, but I am not sure where you could find just a set of feet for your car.

I actually have two sets, one on the car and one one in pieces.

Here they are disassembled. My bases are a 965 part number. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input, guys. I checked the PET for a 964, which shows the same p/n's for the mirror bases that I have:

At the back of the PET is the legend that explains these bases are for a RHD vehicle. :(

I still don't understand why they're angled downward so much, but I guess it doesn't really matter. Anyone interested in getting a good deal, please PM me. Thanks.

The left one angles down because on a RHD car it would mount farther back and higher on the door. My guess is that if you fit the RHD mirror to the right side it will tilt toward the sky.
