Fuchs Width up Front? 6J or 7JX16?
 

I have been saving for a set of 8JX16 for the rear of my stock '88 Targa. This week I located a set for my partial daily driver which has no track aspirations. I will be wrapping these 8Js with the almost new tires currently on the existing 7JX16 (225/50).

My question is whether to keep the current 6JX16 (205/55) in place up front or move the replaced 7JX16 rim to the front using the existing front tires (205/55).

Is there a considerable handling, braking, cornering-initiation difference between 6J and 7J with the same 205/55 tires?

Other data considerations:
-Lean towards keeping the cars appearance as stock as possible
-Do not want to roll the fenders to accommodate a larger front wheel/tire

A considerable difference? No. perhaps a small change in steering response that may be considered better, but it will be small. In theory, the 7" wheels might tend to be slightly more prone to tram-lining, or following grooves in the road, but that change should also be quite small, if present at all.

I think the deeper appearance of the 7" is more attractive, and compliments the look of the 8" rear better. But it is possible that you could run into slight clearance issues, depending on ride height, camber settings and tire brand/model.

7's look much better. I did it, but the left front scrubbed so went back to 6's. I have heard of others having this issue, but its still kind of weird.

I think the only 7's that work on the front are 944 Turbo wheels. Not sure if those were 15's though.

16x7 911 offset wheels work just fine up front on a non-widebody 911. Some folks (me included) needed to roll a portion of the inner fender rim (not outwardly visible) on one or both sides to get these to fit without the outside edge of the tire rubbing while turning.

Any SC or above will be happy with 7s up front. I ran 225/45 and 245/45s on the rear with 8s. I bailed on the 8s when the 245/45s became NLA or god awful pricey. I am back to 6s and 7s with one inch spacers.
