84 Wheel Lock Lug Nut

Yes, there have been many threads on this one. I have read as many as I could before proceeding. As this is the first time after purchase to remove the rear wheels (brakes), I couldn't remove the locked lug nut as the PO never gave me the key (not anywhere in car/tool kit).

Following other's advice, I drilled out the center of the lock on my passenger rear using a 3/8" bit, as all of the other lock nuts have easily come off - probably with worn lock sets, this one was "lock-tight".

Unfortunately, drilling it out, only slightly released it's grip on the lug bolt, and has turned about 4-5 complete turns before stopping. Suggestions?

Photo of lock prior to drilling.

Thanks as always for your advice, abuse or laughs!

If it stopped, it's locked onto the underlying nut, right? Socket and a cheater bar.

How does a locking lug nut actually work?

on the porsche keyed ones, the underlying nut has a hollow face that the lock attaches to - the lock has a sleeve (missing on this pic) that covers the underlying lug nut. SO, it would appear that what's left of the OP's lock is still attached to the lug nut's hollow face and, as 911h20 and patz indicated above, this should come off with a bit more elbow grease -- as the lock doesn't attach to the stud itself.

reminds me of my mechanic's advice years ago that the only person that locking lugnuts will foil is the owner, when he/she REALLY needs to get the nut off . . . .

Guess I really needed a good workout tonight. Elbow grease and a lot more, finally did it in. Didn't expect bolt to be that tight all the way to the end.

Never again, will have I lock lug nuts!

That's for the guidance.

Did this last weekend! In then end, I had to keep sizing down the drill bit to get to the back of it. Lots of elbow grease needed
