Original Car & Driver 83sc Cabriolet Review

1983 Porsche 911SC Cabriolet Archived Road Test – Review – Car and Driver

I had no idea that you could get into these archives. pretty cool to read the original review of my car. Who knew you are supposed to unzip the back window before putting the top down? Never done in almost 17 years of ownership...

I still think the narrow, simple 911 with the top tucked under the tonneau is an elegant looking sports car. I prefer it to my coupe.

I did some looking and found their original SC article. For those who are less interested in the Cabriolet top, this may provide some more interesting reading.

Quote:
...we begin our examination of the car by asking a question. Have you ever driven a Porsche?

Over the years we have tended to discuss the Porsche driving experience in familiar terms, casually tossing off our comments as though every enthusiast in North America had access to the Porsche PR department's motor pool. In that sense, we may have done both you and Porsche a disservice, because driving a Porsche is quite unlike driving anything else in the world.

If you've never owned a Porsche, or driven one, you owe yourself the experience . . . especially since there can't be too many more years of life in the 911 series. I wouldn't want to grow old without counting a Porsche among my memories, and neither should you.

From the '84 factory brochure:

"What is the thrill of driving the world's fastest production convertible? To begin with, there is the pleasure of driving a high-performance sports car that is no way second in performance to the Coupe or the Targa. With the top in place, the 911 Carrera Cabriolet is capable of a top track speed of 146 mph. Secondly, there is the fascination that comes from the knowledge that the 911 Carrera Cabriolet is without a doubt the most logical way of satisfying a desire for a Porsche and a yearning for the pleasures of open-air motoring."

#1 was actually serial 0061 (VIN last 4) which was a US car that was still on the road when I Carfax it back in 2009.

See the "0061" explication here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=5572811

WP0EA0913DS170068, # 8 Cab (1st one in Canada): ??? in Quebec, 8 Records (Jun 94-May 02)

WP0EA0915DS170069, # 9 Cab (2nd one in Canada): On the road in British Columbia, 23 Records (May 94-Sep 2010). All record from the same location (3 battery replacement between 99-01)

WP0EA0911DS170070, # 10 Cab (3rd one in Canada): Mine, on the road in Ottawa, 17 Records (Mar 83-Jul 10). Only on that has records from day one.

I'll probably do WP0EA0911DS170067 (20 Records).

There was a 6 pages supplement in the back jacket of the Owners book. PM me an e-mail address and I'll send you a PDF of it.

Does the $85k MSRP look right to you guys?

1983? I think my 81 Targa was around $30k plus or minus, MSRP.

OK, let's say $8k for the Cab option and $5k for two years newer. Just making numbers up but, damn, a $55k delta seems a stretch.

Can't you still buy a naked 911 for close to $85k today?

i could be wrong, but i think that $85k is base for a current 911. on the side they show price as tested:
PRICE AS TESTED:
$38,355

I recently purchased '83 Cab. #150
Grand Prix White/White.

Originally sold in Reno, NV. Windowsticker shows $34,450.
It has a factory Turbo Tail + Fuchs,
Options brought the total to $40,160.00

It will be for sale soon, after it gets a new top pro installed
as I already have a pristine '87 coupe and need to thin the herd
of four down to two- sorry to see it go, Cabs are great fun.

Divide by 2 (with options) maybe...

$85k was the MSRP of the 89 Cab Turbo

The first pic in that article appears to be a RoW car. Looks like my exact car!
