DIY Ignition wires
There was an in-depth discussion of this a short while ago. The cap end connection is no problem and I have the threaded, plug end connectors on order from Mercedes. Does anyone have a source for a crimp tool to properly install the threaded connectors onto the wire. All of the tools I find are for conventional ring, spade and bullet connectors or coaxial cable or varieties of network/telephone connectors. Nothing looks like it will make the proper crimp on the threaded connector that screws into the Beru plug connector.
Thanks, Jerry M '78 SC |

I believe the post going around said that the easiest and best way to crimp the connectors was to let your dealership do it (Porsche if you can get them to, but other people had more luck with Mercedes dealerships). Even if they charge you a little money, it's worth it.

I used a crimper for coax cable when I built my wire set, worked like a charm. I think it was $16 from radio shack.

Was it the general opinion of this board that the shielding on the OEM wires is not necessary?

I think it was the genneral opinion of the BBS that the sheilding wasn't neccessary if the leads are in good condition, as these are being brand new.
The sheilding was to stop the spark leaping accross from one to the other due to excessive resistance on particular leads. |

the braid is actually to ground RF energy, (that invisible aura which surrounds high tension wires, etc), which could cause static on the radio of the cop sitting next to you, not to ground a leaking high tension spark, or seperate wires from each other. i got my crimp tool from WURTH.

Thank you Tim and JW, I'll look around at Radio Shack and continue to search for a source for the Wurth tool.
