Fuel Tank Vent Hose to Air Box?

Okay I've read a bunch of different threads and need a little help/advice. Mine is a 1974 2.7, it does not have the evaporator/charcoal canister and I'm not all that interested in putting all that stuff in if it's not necessary.

I ran a fuel line/vent hose from the tank like this:

I ran it through the tunnel (patience is a virtue) into the engine compartment. I still get fain gasoline smell and would like to connect it to the air box to perhaps burned off...but mostly to reduce smell.

I'm not sure where to connect on the air box or even the exact route I'll take to avoid HOT locations, does anyone have a photo of how this was done on there pcar?

I think it should go on the left side where this bolt currently is:

I suppose I should T in the vent from the fuel cap area too right? or could I simply plug that?

The bolt is the correct location for the fuel vapor line.

First I would suggest running the line from the fuel tank up close to the fender height to avoid fuel easily flowing into that line.

See this thread for a diagram of how a car of your year would connect to the airbox.
Vacuum reservoir needed?

Lastly do not plug the line from your fuel filler, this is your overflow drain I believe. This should go back the tank somehow.

I like how you ran the line back to your airbox. I have a fuel smell issue on my '68 and I took the open line and fed it back under the car a few feet. I really need to run it back to the carbs via the tunnel.

^^Note the bold^^, you must do this.

Running the line as you've shown means that as you fill up the filler tube on a full tank, the level of gasoline will be above the vapor line, and liquid gasoline will be forced into the vapor line and collect/flow along its route to the engine. That line needs to be routed to a point higher than the filler cap--typically to a location under the cowl (where the factory placed a collection box)--before it loops back down to wherever you wish it to go. If you think you have a gas smell now, wait until that hose is filled with raw gas.

+2 on not plugging the overflow either. Since you don't have the evaporator box (behind the left headlight) in which it should terminate, you need to either run a hose out behind the front bumper, as was done in some early cars, or T it into the line from the tank somewhere before that vapor line reaches its high point under the cowl.

Having that evaporator box would help you immensely. You'd run one line from the filler tube overflow down to the evaporator box and along the route, you'd T in the evaporator hose from the tank. If either the overflow or vapor hoses collect liquid gasoline, it would settle in the evaporator box and the line from the evaporator box would run to your intake.

why not just take the vapor off at the line into the filler neck instead of at that tank location?

Okay, I re-routed the fuel vent hose high along the fender, away from the hood hinge and as high as I can go under the cowl (I assume this means behind the dash).

As you know this hose continues to run through the tunnel will connect the the air box in the next day or two...where the bolt used to be. Does anyone have a photo of how this should be done? the path the hardware etc.

Also I'm still not sure what to do with the filler overflow thingy as sen here

There seems to be some kind of filter medium inside it and the angle doesn't line up with any thing...again got any photos to help me out?

So I guess what I'm asking is...

Has anyone out there connected the fuel overflow from the filler neck back into the fuel tank? or at least the vent hose I've been playing with...

It seems like I would have to bend the 5/16" dia overflow in order to get it pointed down enough to get a hose on it. Any advice/photos?

I'm just going to plug it

...for now. She's going in storage this weekend anyway, so I'll just duct tape up the fuel filler neck overflow for now and maybe come up with a better solution for next spring.

Cheers!
