switch openings on IP, and dash wiring harness
 

I noticed yesterday, while taking my car on a mini road trip on my day off, that there are switch openings behind the vinyl on the instrument panel; IIRC these were for the rear wiper and headlamp washer switches on cars so equipped. My first thought was that it would be nice to use these handy openings to locate switches, for, well, I dunno what, but I will eventually want to control something. Would this require adding wiring to the dash harness, or is there already a pigtail of some kind behind the instruments?

You would need to add wiring to whatever switch you add to control something.

which would likely be EASIER than trying to locate/tap into the harness in the first place :)

OK, thanks. It is often the case in newer cars that dash and interior harnesses are only built one way, and cars with non-installed features nonetheless have all wiring already present - you simply add the switch/module/whatever you want and plug it in. Sometimes you have to reprogram a module. But I had no idea if I'd find something like a couple of taped-off leads if I dug back in there!

There are some harnesses on a 911 that every 911 has and then there are a lot of smaller harnesses that are just installed with certain options. There are a few places where there might be a wire not used.

A long time ago, Chuck Stoddard came up with an idea for an anti-theft kill switch that would be a good use for one of those holes.
