Run but no idle
 

Trying to get my 69 911t streetable. I just got a carb synchronizer to balance my webbers. The car will start and run, he'll you can drive it, it just won't idle once you take your foot of the gas. As long as you pump the peddle it will stay running. I have to have it idling to balance the carbs. Where should is start to find out why it won't idle? I've tried turning up the idle screws and the fuel screws on the carb and nothing. This is my first carbed car any help is appreciated.

Valve adjustment?

Will valves being out keep it from idling but still let it run? I'm new to porsche engines. Thanks

My neighbor had the same problem getting his newly acquired 69 911 to idle too. To my surprise, a valve adjustment fixed it.

I'd be very surprised by that too!

More likely a carb issue. Essentially your weber has three "circuits" or functions. Idle, Main, and accelerator. From your desrcription, "accelerator" is working. Maybe "main" too since you can drive (though I'm assuming not too well). But "idle" is not.

I'd start by looking at the idle jets. They are very small orifices and easily plugged by dirt and debris in the carbs.

Then I'd check float levels.

Followed by general condition of the carbs. Dirt and corrosion? Particularly he small ports by the butterfly where idle circuit fuel is dispensed.

But, before I looked at anything on the carb, I'd be verifying that ignition was correct. Timing/dwell, and firing order (just in case).

If it don't spark right, it won't run right no matter what the carb does. And, if spark and carb are right, and still no joy, then you have to start considering mechanical condition and internal causes.

Thanks can the idle jets be cleaned if dirty or do you have to replace them?

Holey s***, that was it I pulled the idle jets out ran a jewelers bit through them sprayed some cleaner and walla it fn idled. Carbs still need to be balanced but damn does it idle smooth. Sorry if I'm being overly suprised by this but this is my first time messing with carbs and was a little intimidated by them. I was hoping that they didn't need a full rebuild. Thanks

That's the plan as son as I get the shifter bushings in.
