Did 911's ever use 914 gauges?

I ask because I have two mechanical speedometers with 914 part numbers that both came out of 911 cars.

I bought a 250kph speedo to replace my 150mph. I took out the speedo and saw the 914 part#...scratched my head and then looked at the rest of my gauges. All the rest have 911 part#. The 914 speedo also matches the rest of the gauges perfectly in color as well. The 911 kph speedo I put in has a different color orange needle.

I have another 150mhp speedo that came out of a friend's 911 that also has a 914 part#

my car is a 76' 911s and my friend's car is a 71' 911t. Both cars have had "face lifts" more than once so I wouldn't be surprised if someone just swapped them out purely because of the fact they found 914 speedos at a cheaper price. It also wouldn't surprise me if Porsche just used 914 speedos in the cheaper 911s of 76'.

my speedo is dated 3.74(at least I think that's the date) part# 914 641 505 30 (also has a more shallow metal bezel)

other speedo is dated 7.72 part# 914 641 505 020

Anyone have any insight?

Cheer,
Peet

They are generic VDO gauges......911 gauges work in 914s and vise versa. Prolly someone swapped them in when needed. Same gauge workings just different parts numbers and cosmetics.

I totally get that they are generic gauges and they are interchangeable. I am just curious if possibly they came with them from factory... I just thought it was kind of a coincidence that two 911 relatively close in age both had 914 speedos. Also the fact that the 911 speedo I put in didn't match the set where the 914 speedo matched the rest of the 911 gauges perfectly struck me as odd.

From the factory? Likely not. 914s were built by VW with bodies made by a third party. 914/6s were built by Porsche.

Parts were shipped in by the jobbers.

Those are way too far out if the date range. They would never put a 72 date speedo on a 71. And that 74 speedo is too early, even for an early production summer of 75 built my76.

All good points, thanks for the input. They are most likely speedos that were swapped in at some point for some reason. Either way. I'm not keeping either of them. Will be in the classifieds soon.

Perhaps they were swapped to replace the 85mph speedometers that I seem to remember were required for a few years back in the 70s.
