A few weeks ago ater the previous time when I had my 1995 993 out on the road I had topped off the oil level
with Mobil 0W-40 so that the oil gauge read 9 o'clock and full on the dip stick. The next time I took the car out, after about 15 minutes of driving in local traffic the oil warning light came on and the oil pressure gage dropped to about 1 barr at idle. The warning light went off when accerating (and has not come on since) but the gage reading only reached (when moving) to about 2.5 barr at about 2-3000 RPM on my way stright home. This car up to this point has always had oil pressures of about 3 barr at idle and 4-5 when anywheres over 2500 RPM and the oil waring light had never come on. Is this a sign of a failure of the oil pressure sending unit or could it be a catastrophic failure of the oil pump?. There are no oil leaks and the engine is dry. |

The oil pressure sending unit on the 993 does not have a long life. The failure usually shows as erratic readings, often going to one or the other extreme of the gauge. When mine was failing, I never saw a low pressure light, so your problem might not be the gauge.
