defrost switch pinout
Anyone got the pinout/wiring schematic for MY 1977 Targa, 2 stage defrost switch? I can turn defrost on with ignition off, light comes on switch and I can hear the relay pull in. Not right. My schematic shows a red/black line from ig. switch to black wire that goes to a terminal on defrost switch. The terminals are labeled 1,2,3,4,and 5 on the back of the defrost switch. Which wires go to what terminal? I presume something is not wired correctly. If defrost switch wiring is o.k., then I"ll have to go to wiring on the back of the ignition switch. Thanks all...

I would put a volt meter to see what voltage if any you get when switches are set or check to make sure the wire on the glass is not severed. If you have tinted windows, the tint installer may have severed it.

Did that Draco. My issue is why defrost works with ignition switch completely off. Should not be the case. Don't want an inadvertent battery drain because of switch being on by mistake. Reminds me of the old VW radios that could be turned on when ignition was off!

Oh I see.
I have the Haynes that covers your year too. If you need that schematics, PM me. Jim |
Got'em as well Jim. They don't show wire to terminal location either. I saw a post on pelican not to long ago that showed the back of the switch with wires attached. Damn if I can find it...

Saw that post Spyder in the archives, kinda hard to see terminal numbers and MY 77 wiring colors are a little different. Still looking, thanks anyway.

Bob,
Can you shoot a picture of the back of your switch? Actually, that is not needed. If your problem is that the defrost works with ignition off, then it is powered by the wrong bus. You connection issue is at the ignition switch or the fuse panel most likely. A red/black wire should be on the 15 terminal of the ignition switch, then go to the fuse. The fuse should be bussed with other electrical loads switched when the key is in the run and start position from what I can tell. There might be a bus strap on top or back of the fuse linking other fuse locations together. Maybe a shot of the fuse panel? Mike |
That's what I'm thinking Mike. Ignition switch or fuse panel. I'll do some more digging this week and report back my findings. AFAIK my defrost switch is wired correctly. I replaced it a few years ago and correctly labeled terminals with corresponding wires when I did the work. Thanks for your input.
