I have a 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa that was made to order by the Porsche Business Development organization. It has all of the options available in 1985 plus a custom interior. I tried to have it posted in the Porsche Panorama, however, they required the body number in addition to letters from Porsche and the VIN. The body number is supposed to be handwritten under the dash. I have not heard this before and do not want to tear the dash apart to find it. Anyone ever heard of this?

I would only post the VIN, the body number will be under your center console and not easily accessible. That treatment including the wood is what the Sonderwunch shop did.

vin and production numbers
yes the production number is under the dash in area of gauges, top left, just a word of caution, dont give the production number to anyone, other than porsche,no one else needs it, vin# is sufficient, there are guys trolling the forums looking for this kind of information, similar to stealing a credit card number, good luck.

Agree with Frank; keep the prod # to yourself. There are unscrupulous types fishing for that info. If you have a serious vetted buyer you can disclose then.
Dig the old school equalizer in the console. ![]()

Your production number will be stamped on the lower dash sheet metal, below and slightly to the right of the centerline of the radio opening in the dash. It about where the red oval is on the picture, below. You should be able to see it by taking off the lower dash bolster. It's held on by a nuts threaded onto two 5mm studs that are embedded into the bolster. Use an 8mm socket or wrench to remove them.
It was also usually written in grease pencil, on the inside upper surfaces of the door sheet metaal, if you'd rather yank the door panel off to look for it. JR ![]() |
