Yikes, $850 is a ripoff compared to $150. There are just some things in my mind that are best left to the "experts" and redoing an alternator is one of them. Depending on the year of your 911 parts could be hard to procure. And, you could have your fan and housing redone by Mark Motshegan and have ~$350 left over!!! I've attached a picture or two of his work on mine. He has all sorts of colors. BTW he used a ceramic coating process. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1448764491.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1448764532.jpg Best, Tom |
Yeah, the redoing of the alternator is completely out of my wheelhouse. That fan looks amazing. What color is that? I am not interested in flashing it up with a color, that looks perfect.
|
I think it's a platinum hue; I wanted a contrasting shade on the housing, but I think they ended up the same, which was not a problem at all for me.

Are the voltage regulators on these adjustable at all? It'd be nice to get 14.2V at the battery.
|
Well, that sucked. I don't know how I'm going to get that plastic housing bolted back to the alternator when I go to put it back in. My hands are just too big. But, it's out, everything is labeled and I think that Grizzfan's suggestion to get the fan and housing redone is a good idea and would tidy up the engine nicely. That said, I'm kind of torn and part of me thinks that just cleaning it up and leaving the 36 years of patina on the fan is more fitting.

If you don't want to wait weeks for a replating, you could search for "Gibbs" on this forum, and just clean it somewhat with $10 Gibbs oil and a scotchpad.
How do you have all the tools, but no experience with your 911? Experience with prior cars? Keep up attempting the small projects. It sucks, but is rewarding. And each project makes you a little bit better. |
Re installing the plastic housing onto the alternator is the most challenging part of the job. Those little nuts and washers are hard to handle.

Jezzzz... remember to feed wires through air deflector before connecting them to alt.

Just get a new Valeo alternator, the reman will fail.

Rework pics.

Please take some photos as you finish this. Alternator replacement on a 911 seems like a real headache.
